E. Neil Harri shares a few photos that he took from the air on Monday, showing the Sturgeon River flooding in Houghton and Baraga Counties. Neil reports that these photos were taken along the winding Sturgeon River between M-38 and US-41, just south of Chassell. I cannot pinpoint the exact locations for you, but I do know that this is NOT US-41 that is flooded and wanted to be sure to say that, so it's not mistaken for that area.

I cannot imagine being surrounded by water like this. It sure makes the water in our basement seem much more trivial than we first believed it to be. Our thoughts go out to all those that are experiencing flooding during this rapid melt of our Copper Country snow cover.

Water, water, everywhere, but not a drop to drink.....

I feel for these flood victims, our place has flooded twice since March because of excessive rains.

Such very sad sights! May God bring comfort to all of those folks!

Wow...I was expecting a big runoff this year, but not like this. Any sign of receding?

By D. A. (Midwested) on Thursday, May 2, 2013 - 10:56 am:

I wanted to confirm to you all that my wife passed
away yesterday morning at the University of Iowa,
just a stones throw from Janie T. (I bet you
didn't know we we "neighbors"). My wife lived an
extra 17 years of love and kindness and was able
to witness and help our son growing up, all due to
those that donated the organs of their own lost
loved ones.

Thank you all for such kind words yesterday.

Here in the upper Mississippi Valley we know
flooding all too well and too frequently, so I am
very sympathetic to all those affected by it. It
can be so devastating.

Apologies. I should have posted my first message in
"What's Up".

By Paul H. Meier (Paul) on Thursday, May 2, 2013 - 11:10 am:

My sympathies to D.A. and the folks affected by the flooding. We just had a record flood here in Central Illinois that destroyed a lot of homes and businesses. All the preparaitions for a "Hundred Year" flood weren't enough. Hopefully the Copper Country communities will come together to help the affected families. As we know down here, the Big Brothers from the State and the Fed aren't real fast out of the gate.

D A, I'm so sorry to hear of your wife's passing. Keep all the wonderful memories she help create with you deep in your heart. The U. of I Hospitals and Clinics is a top hospital, you made sure she had the best care having her there. No I had no idea you are so close, no matter where we are scattered across this great world, we all come close with one another everyday thanks in part to this great Pasty World!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, May 2, 2013 - 12:20 pm:

D.A., wishing you comfort from God, and sending a warm hug. It's so very hard giving up one's closest loved one. Had to do that myself 2 years ago this month.

Greetings:

Anyone have an idea why the Sturgeon River is so muddy? I could see drainage from last Fall's plowed fields but that is a lot of Earth in the river. Have there been recent forest fires or some extensive clear-cutting going on?

Thank you.

JT

That is the natural color of the Sturgeon. There is more of the clay than usual washed off the banks with the high water.

By Christopher A Williston (Oskarbaybiker) on Friday, May 3, 2013 - 10:14 am:

That plus as the water flow velocity increases, it causes more soil erosion. Its a natural phenomena. The Copper River in Alaska has so much turbidity in spring thaw that it will scrub all of the color of a black combat boot to the leather color in under 30 minutes. All from natural soil erosion.
