Let me introduce you to Barb Bouwkamp's black lab, Parker. He's quite the dog, sitting in his snow filled pen, not realizing that he could just walk right over the fence and be out on the loose. Barb said the snow was four feet deep when she took this picture a few days ago and she likens this to a "mental stockade" for Parker, because he knows that this is his pen and those are his boundaries, so even if he can walk right out, he won't.

I like to think he's just one of those rare Copper Country breed of dogs that is just so smart, he knows he'll be in trouble if he leaves his fenced in area. ;->

That last shot of Parker was during the snowfall this past week and here again, he could just run off that porch, but no sir, he's a good boy and he just stays where he should, accumulating snow on his nose, until it's time to go back inside. Good dog!

That's the way our dog is too. She knows her boundaries, and even though she can run off any time she wants, she stays put. Maybe it's a lab trait. Smart dogs :-)

That last picture is most accurate for conditions this morning again. Getting pounded by snow right now:

Good grief!

Of all the many breeds of dogs we have had none of them had any desire to run off. We instilled into them all they had no reason to leave their loving homes we provided them.

That is one BIG sweet doggie!:>

I'm curious, Barb, how did Parker get his name?

By philip odum (Phishinfill) on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 - 09:52 am:

No need to jump the fence there..just walk over it...incredible...

What a good dog.

I have the same problem with my two dogs this year. I had the back yard fenced in just for them to remain safe and the snow is so deep-they can walk over it. Amazing! They only did it once so far because they got a royal scolding from me but i won't leave them out there unsupervised until the snow level drops....in July....lol Great pics,Barb!

Parker's pen...good writing instruments, too.

By Barbara Bouwkamp (Barbarab) on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 - 05:52 pm:

Shirley, Parker had an interesting history; he started out in a box of 7 puppies left out on a road in Ontonagon. Was adopted by a family in Calumet who left him when they moved. Then lived for a short time with a gentleman who took care of him until he died suddenly and Parker ended back up in the Humane Society. When we got him, his name was Volt or Bolt. We decided we would rather call him Parker, because when you are yelling for your dog, Parker sounds better than Volt/Bolt. Parker loves kids and will follow them anywhere. He also loves the mailman and will run after any mail truck, UPS truck....and square truck as he expects a treat due to the mailman spoiling him. He associates small square trucks with treats. He is big, about 115 pounds and is very tall. He is pretty well behaved most of the time.
He eats vegetables, even brussel sprouts but hates liver.

Aww, Parker may have had a hard time 'getting started' but he sure looks well-loved now, Barbara! Our daughter and son-in-law had a lab many years ago and he had the sweetest disposition! They've had German Shorthairs since then and they, like labs, are very sweet-natured.

I agree with him about brussel sprouts..and liver.;)

Alex and Gary, that makes 3 of us!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 - 09:46 am:

Alex, Gary, and Erica, I got it too....matter of fact my mom bought a Parker (fountain) pen for me when I was in the 4th grade. Had to fill it from an ink bottle.

By Barbara Bouwkamp (Barbarab) on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 - 05:37 pm:

Yes, Parker in his Pen, no wonder he likes the mailman, he brings letters written with Parker Pens.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, April 26, 2013 - 11:31 pm:

That's a well behaved dog.
