Welcome to another cold, wintry day in the U.P.! If you're wondering whether the river out at Big Traverse is opening up yet, you can wonder no more, since Melanie Hakala Rossi was out there on Wednesday and brought back today's photos from there.

Her first shot shows one of the camps along the river and you can see the water still white and frozen, just in front of the wooden breakwall. So there won't be any kayaking up that little waterway for awhile yet.

The remaining photos from Melanie were taken of the navigational aids on the Big Traverse pier. You can see that when Lake Superior whips up into a fury, she sprays everything in sight with her waters and in the cold temperatures like we've been having, the water freezes almost instantly on contact with whatever it lands on. I also find it fascinating, the way the ice freezes just as the wind is blowing it straight out in some cases or at an angle in others.

Yes indeed, the forces of nature around Lake Superior never cease to amaze me, even after living near her shores my entire life. She is definitely a Great Lake!
