Brenda Leigh had a front row seat on the shores of Lake Superior, near her Brimley home, watching as the Canadian Ice Cutter, Samuel Risley made its cuts to open up the ice in the channel, enabling the freighters to move through freely.

The second photo shows a Canadian Steamship Lines boat passing by. I can't quite read the name on this freighter and neither could Brenda, so we'll leave it up to our "resident boat nerds" to figure out which one she is and let us know. Sure is impressive to see these big boats out there amidst all that ice.

Brenda's last three photos show the beauty of the Lake Superior ice as it gets shoved and heaved into piles with the winds, as the break up begins. The colors are truly amazing, along with the almost transparency of those large chunks of ice. Quite the show mother nature puts on as the season begins its change to Spring.

Dicey ice!
Great work once again, Brenda!

The Discovery Channel had a crew at Pendill's on Saturday to film a snowmobile falling into the Lake. One of our sons was ice fishing there at that time there in Whitefish Bay.

Great photos, Brenda. I am still amazed by the gorgeous blue ice. And, I am still wondering what makes the ice blue?

I remember when I was a kid living in Detroit and we could go "up north" to visit for a week every August, my Aunt would ask me (as I exited Superior after a swim), "did you see any ice cubes out there?" I'd laugh every time. I think of her every time I see pictures like this. Having lived in Detroit in the winters, I never knew what became of Superior during that season. LOL
