Two weeks ago Edie and I motored out of the U.P. on the Wisconsin side of Lake Michigan, down through Chicago, and eventually on to The Villages in Florida, where we delivered over 500 pasties. Our trip back was not a direct one, heading instead up to New England, dodging a number of snowstorms along the way. A nice visit with Jon and Katriina in Connecticut, then we turned back toward Michigan.

After a brief stop in Clarkston Friday night, we set sail up I-75 toward the Bridge at the top of the mitten. But this time we arrived in the northern L.P. Saturday evening at the same time as a Lake Effect snowstorm. So here we are this morning, a few blocks away from the Mighty Mac, which appears to be a bit slippery and hard to see (thanks mackinacbridge.org).

Cyber-cruising the area this morning, I came across a nice website of Mackinaw City history by Madeline Okerman Adie and Arcadia Publishing, the folks with all those neat old postcards. The one above must have been a spot not too far from where I am typing these words. But I can guarantee you it cost us more than 25 cents to spend the night.

It will be nice to set foot back in the U.P. after half a month roaming around the eastern U.S. We sure miss this place when we're away.

Have a good week :o)

Glad you two had a enjoyable trip, but there is no place like home.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Sunday, February 24, 2013 - 07:57 am:

Edie & Charlie, sounds like a nice visit of family, friends, pasties, and to see a part of the good ol' U.S.A!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, February 24, 2013 - 09:00 am:

Those look like 30s model cars.
Glad you're almost home, Charlie. Did Katriina have her little one yet?

That's A LOT of driving! How many miles did you
log?

By Pat & Glenda (Gormfrog) on Sunday, February 24, 2013 - 09:01 am:

There is a good lesson for us here, a snowflake is one of God's most fragile creations, but look what they can accomplish when they stick together!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, February 24, 2013 - 09:17 am:

Yes, a very good lesson to learn there, Gormfrog!

By Donna (Donna) on Sunday, February 24, 2013 - 10:13 am:

Charlie that photo looks scary but so adventuresome! It's good to know you guys will soon be back in your nest. Good timing for a trip to warmer envriromens. GLAD YOU HAD A GOOD TIME. aND THEN THE TIME WITH FAMILY. How grand. I still feel that a beautiful scene of winter can be as wonderful as an autumn one. Just depends if one is comfortable and safe whereever you stand. Welcome home.

I've driven across that bridge in that weather once. Scary stuff. They closed it down to through traffic right after we went across. Glad you guys made it safely across!

Hi. My youngest son the Big Mac looked pretty much like that when my youngest son drove across it on Wednesday, going back to his coop job in Ohio, after recruiting at Michigan Tech during the blizzard on Tuesday. It was not at all fun, for sure. I would have waited, I think, like Charlie and Edie did, but kids! Have a safe trip the rest of your way home, Charlie & Edie!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Monday, February 25, 2013 - 08:19 am:

We made it back to Eagle River late Sunday evening, taking our time crossing the U.P. There is a whole lot more snow here that when we left 2 weeks ago!

Shirley: The new arrival hasn't arrived yet. Her paternal Great Grandfather is hoping for March 1, which happens to be his birthday.

Eugenia: We put on almost 5,000 miles.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, February 25, 2013 - 08:29 am:

Thanks, Charlie...hope her Great Grandfather gets his wish. Sometimes the first one takes its own sweet time.;-)

Charlie and Edie:
It sounds like you guys had a great trip. Glad you made it home safe. Crossing the Straits is always "interesting".

By Pat & Glenda (Gormfrog) on Monday, February 25, 2013 - 11:54 am:

I actually chose March 1 for my birthday also (Pat), after much thought and comparison. A GREAT DAY!!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, February 25, 2013 - 01:49 pm:

I chose March 11, l-o-n-g time ago.;>
