If you live in the Keweenaw, you know what these pictures are about, but if you don't and have never experienced a winter with 100 inches of snow in just a few weeks, then let me tell you what's happening. When the snow piles up on the roofs here UP North, you have to go up there and shovel it off, because the weight of the snow could cause lots of damage to your roof, namely, caving it in.

Today's shots from Marlin Wenberg show you what quite a few Yoopers are turning to, in order to not have to shovel their roof so often. Marlin has a metal roof on his home and when the temperatures warm just a little or even if the sun shines on it for part of a day, the metal heats up and unloads the snow right off that roof. When that happens, he said it sounds like long, rolling thunder and then a big thump, when it hits the ground.

Here in his photos though, the snow wasn't coming off quickly, but instead it was taking it's sweet old time sliding off, so he treated us to some pictures of his curling snow. He said if it didn't come off by the end of the day, he'd be helping it along.

Oh WOW! I'd say that's what you call a real "hangover".;>

Good one, Shirley!

While growing up in Hubbell in the 40's we were often assigned the job to "shovel off the roof". We 5 boys would work at it for a fews hours and then step off into the snow bank from on top of the 2 story house. Mom always had fresh "quoken" that she baked that day.

Must be the wind that makes it curl like that.

Now that is a very "snowly "decorated roof!Yes-one hundred inches of snow in a few weeks makes for some interesting snow removal challenges!

Now we can see how a glacier moves. Can the next iceage be far behind?

Now, that's a lot of snow!

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 10:06 am:

Hey wvyooper - haven't you heard? We're having global warming!

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 11:02 am:

I suppose it'll HIT the ground with a quiet loud noise too.

By Eugene Zuverink (Zube) on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 11:08 am:

I hope that snow came off. That is a good one
Shirley "hangover".

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 02:15 pm:

Amazing what snow can do.

By Richard Wieber (Flarich) on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 02:53 pm:

Alex---The curl is made the same way you would curl a piece of copy paper by pulling it down over the edge of your desk. Try it.

By James W. Hird (Wvyooper) on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 - 04:43 pm:

OK Mr. Bill check out the farmers almanac. They seem to think as I do that we are headed for the next iceage.
