What iconic restaurant used to be in downtown Houghton?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - 07:51 am:

My screen is black for some reason, so I'm going to say "Big Boy". Used to eat there all the time.

Good morning! Hope I see some pictures soon!

Big Boy

The first Big Boy restaurant I remember was Shoney's in Nashville, then we moved to PA, and it was (I think) Elbe's, and here in So. OH, it is Frisch's. Big Boy really gets around.
BTW, congratulations, Deb.

Good morning, everyone! What a great slide show this morning. 2012 sure looks cold, but then you see the warmth of the light in the 2006 shot and you warm back up!

Dan's pictures always tug at my heart strings. What an eye for a
view!

I agree, Kosk!
Also love the grandparents' helpers!:)

Spent many evenings 'back in the day' having the "Big Burger"... "Hey - anyone hungry? Let's go 'Boy!"

Still missing Yooper Joe very bad. I know Janie is missing Brody too. Posting this for all who have lost a best friend, a dog. :(

Kipling said it best:

THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - 04:39 pm:

I love that poem, it says it the way it is! Oh dearly missing my Brody! He left us 4 weeks ago today. Bob & I are planning this spring to bring a Siamese kitten to our family. I grew up with Siamese, love them!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - 05:30 pm:

Janie, having grown up Siamese kitties, then you know it'll be just like having another doggie.:> We've had several in the past and found that to be true. Love 'em!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - 05:38 pm:

Shirley, you know it! They remind me so much of the personality of a Scottish Terrier! They can be that Scottie go go go then turn on the Scottie aloofness, but always has the Scottie cuddliness. I think Brimley and the kitten will become pretty good buddies.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - 06:06 pm:

I'd bet on it, Janie!
(oops, left "with" out of the above)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - 06:11 pm:

That poem works for a cat, too. Our Tippy would walk all over with us outside, no matter where we went. He was always by our sides. You'd have sworn he was a dog. We miss him so much. I've had cats that have been 1/2 Siamese. Somebody gave my son's cat (1/2 Siamese) to a farm because my son was moving and couldn't take her. Then my son came back to the home he had lived in with the cat. One night that cat was waiting for him on his doorstep when he got home. The cat was brought 40 miles away, across a river, etc. She found her way back home. How can you not love pets??

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - 06:39 pm:

It has been 1 mo and 2 days since we had to put our Sami(cat) down. We are missing her so much.Like your Tippy Deb,Sami would follow us around the house. She just had to be near us.

Our last Shoney's closed this year.I don't know of any others around here.

Here in N.Ga it has rained for at least 9 days. There is flooding all over.It is supposed to get colder with a possibility of snow and or icing.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 - 06:53 pm:

Fran, my family members in Nashville have been through the same thing weatherwise including sleet and freezing rain. Awful!
