On this c-c-cold and snowy morning in the Keweenaw, we have a follow up to last week's Shoebox Memory of Russell and June Bergh. June is right in the middle of the action of that crazy bunch of U.P. kids in the first photo. Maybe some other Pasty Cam regulars can help identify the others.

Many people just know the U.P. in that 'other' season. As I look down across the snow covered dunes outside my office window this morning, I can't even see the lake, and it's hard to believe that summer will ever come again.

A handsome picture of June and the Captain in the second photo... Russell Bergh was a maritime legend in his day, commanding many famous vessels in these part, like Ranger, Sundew, etc. Our thanks again to Nora Dee, their granddaughter, for sharing these neat old pictures.

Stay warm! Have a good week :o)

I love old family photos! The captain commanded one of my favorite vessels -- the Sundew!
Thanks Nora and Charlie!

Priceless photos!! All family photos, current and past, are such reminders how important family is and should be valued. As I am my families historian, and have 85-90% of all my families photos, past and current. I know this first hand. And as my late Grandma Ada preached, "Date every picture!"

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Sunday, January 20, 2013 - 10:38 am:

Would Ralph Bergh (the asst. engineer on the Ranger III when I worked there) have been related to Russell? Just curious and finally decided to voice the question. Thanks.

Not only date each picture, also identify.....

By JoAnne Stefanac (Davejostef) on Sunday, January 20, 2013 - 10:54 am:

Amen to that, FJL! I have a whole box of old pictures of folks from my family history and not a one has anything written on them. Since the family's all gone, I have no one to tell me who's who so I feel like I have a wasted treasure. What to do with such photos? Can't bring myself to throw them away....I'm at a loss.

Greetings:

It appears that June is holding a state of the art camera for that time. If she has a camera I wonder who took the photo.

I agree with Janie T's Grandmother. Name, date, where, and taken by whom all helps. Especially in the digital world of today. What does a random file number tell about any photo.

Luckily in my photos family members are identified. Any photos with vehicles, Bob with his expertise in naming year and model, can give me a year the photo was taken. Or I can get an idea of the year by the ages of family members.

I so enjoyed todays photos as i got to know June through my daughter in law and her family. She was such a beautiful and sweet lady.

JT, I just noticed the camera after you brought it to attention. It looks like an old Kodak box camera like my mama had. Made great photos, even after it was being held together with a couple pieces of adhesive tape.;>

Richard, yes, Ralph Bergh was a cousin to my Dad, Russell, so was Howard Bergh from Copper Harbor. What a nice surprise to come home from work and see my parents again featured on Pasty Cam Notes!

Oh what a wonderful surprise to see pictures of June and
Russell Bergh. I have many fond Jacobsville memories of
June and Russell and growing up with their wonderful girls!

JoAnne - what a sad problem you have. If you have or anyone else in the family has any other photos where the individuals are identified, you might try comparing your unknown photos to those known ones. I have had moderate success with this method.

Howard Bergh, was he the lovely gentleman that worked at Ft Wilkins and helped rebuild the enlisted mens cabins at the fort? What an awesome guy!
