I couldn't believe it when I saw the size of this sunflower that Amy Machiela and Dave Moyle grew in their garden. Amy told me that she's 5'3", so they're estimating the sunflower is right around 15 feet tall. Pretty amazing, considering that it wasn't given anything special to grow to that size. Amy said that her and Dave use the square foot gardening method, with 4' by 4' beds which are only 8 inches deep, with organic soil. The only thing it was given to grow, is water and TLC. She also said that it's planted right in there with bush beans and spaghetti squash and the diameter of the stalk/stem is quite huge and sturdy, too. It really reminds me of Jack and the beanstalk, with it reaching up to the sky like that.

The rest of Amy and Dave's sunflowers look bright and healthy, too. Perhaps it has something to do with their garden being right next to the lake.

That colander full of carrots is also quite interesting. I didn't know that carrots came in colors other than orange and wondered if maybe the different colors have a different taste, but Amy said they all taste like carrots. Kind of makes me wonder why they come in different colors then, except perhaps to just look unique and different. I guess that's reason enough. Amazing!!! My daughter LOVES sunflowers and asked me to plant some. I have only one that has blossomed and it is not nearly that tall! No green thumb here!

Thanks everyone for allowing us to share our garden. What a
rewarding experience! There are excellent carrot recipes
from Food Network and Allrecipes. (No relation to turnips as
car as I can find, but they are good roots!) Happy harvest!

That's as FAR as I can find, of course. (Sorry, first post, but
not my last post, on Pasty!)

The deer ate my daughter's sunflowers here in GA!
Maybe it's because they were by the mailbox and not
in the garden with the electric fence around it! :)

It's Torch Lake, I meant to write that yesterday. And the deer
have been in the garden...especially the last few days.

When we got back from our trip UP this summer, the deer had eaten all the apples off of our tree. Luckily, I think they're beautiful creatures, lol!
