Brockway Mountain has a new look where the first lookout is located and Amanda Wais, along with her parents, takes us there for a look. Construction for this small roadside park, began back in May, so for most of the summer, there wasn't a way to snap one of the most traditional photos people snap while in Copper Harbor. This spot has always had a beautiful view, with Copper Harbor scenes below it, but now with the addition of these stone walls, steps and railings, the lookout is a thing of beauty, itself.

A big thank you to Amanda for taking us along with her and her parents. Amanda does some blogging about life at the tip of the Keweenaw, there in Copper Harbor, so if you're interested, click on over to daharbor.blogspot.com, to see what adventure she's up to each week at the Harbor.

P.S... Pasties are shipping again from Calumet! Have some next week

Good Morning All.... Friday at last

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 08:08 am:

Wow!!! What a nice park ~ quite an improvement!

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 08:14 am:

Very nice...I saw the constuction back in May and wondered what it was for.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 08:17 am:

Wow indeed!! Who did the work on this? They should be commended for doing such a nice job; it looks spectacular in the photos.....

By tom fisher (Osceola) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 08:24 am:

Please also note that the original roadway and rock-wall work was part of a WPA project, done for the most part, without power equipent. Locomotives and rail-cars on loan from the C&H brought materials up from Ahmeek, the rest was human-power.

I often visit Amanda's site and enjoy her writings and scenes from 'da harbor'.:)
Beautiful stonework!

WOW indeed!! We usually bypass Brockway for the lakeshore drive, but I guess that'll have to go on my to do list for the next time.

Thanks for sharing that!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 08:53 am:

I probably saw the construction in June and promptly forgot about it. I'm amazed at these pictures! So unexpected! I'll be checking it out when we're up for the colors (if there are any!) the weekend of October 6.

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 09:03 am:

The last time I was on the mountain, they were just beginning to tear up the lookout...WOW, I can't wait to visit!!

By TTom (Mplsyooper) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 09:30 am:

Gary Heikkala Builders from Calumet and Ruonavaara Masonry from Houghton did the stonework and concrete. Love how it turned out!!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 09:46 am:

Outstanding work by the local contractors ~ glad to see the jobs stay in the local area! Can't wait to see it in person.

By sometimesyooper (Nancyd) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 10:12 am:

We'll be up n a couple of weeks to close the cottage and will see this for sure. They did a great job. Hoping now that the next funds available will go repair the road up there...

By Jim Grill (Grillski) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 10:29 am:

WOW! What a wonderful improvement to the Copper Harbor Area. Matter of fact we decided to run up (drive) there this afternoon to look it over first hand, and follow up with dinner at the Harbor Haus.

By Paul H. Meier (Paul) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 10:58 am:

Tom,
You referenced C&H loaning a locomotive and cars to the WPA. There have been many hints that the old Keweenaw Central was kept intact and was operated as needed by C&H - particularly as far as Phoenix. Yours and the few references to road construction indicate it was used as far as Mandan. Do you have more information?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 11:09 am:

That really looks nice! Well worth all the labor and costs!

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 12:35 pm:

I can't get over the quality look of this new project and I'm delighted it was done by local masons. Have often been taken by the amount of really good masonry to be seen in the Copper Country like the old mining company's office buildings and even warehouse buildings. Hope it never becomes a "lost art".

By lookielu (Eyeswideshut) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 03:54 pm:

Progress :(

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 07:55 pm:

does anybody know if they made it wheelchair accesable?

Mary says: mckill mouse ~ I wondered the same thing, since you can't really tell from these photos, but I can't imagine that anything that's being constructed now-a-days, can be built without being up to code and handicap accessible, so I'm guessing that it is. If you check out the second photo, over on the left, you can see that the sidewalk slopes down. That makes me think this must be a wheelchair accessible sidewalk right there. You think? :-)

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Friday, September 14, 2012 - 10:19 pm:

I bet it is, like Bond Falls.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Saturday, September 15, 2012 - 09:07 am:

Where's today's Pasty pic?

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, September 15, 2012 - 09:25 am:

And where are Mary and Charlie?

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, September 16, 2012 - 05:07 am:

We had a little technical difficulty Saturday morning, appeared a couple of hours after we normally do. But still haven't missed a day in 15 years :o)
