Charlie is usually the master of the quiz questions here at Pasty Central, but with the help of Liz Sivola, we have a puzzler for you here on the regular Pasty Cam page today, too. Liz spotted this flag flying in Calumet and wonders how observant folks really are and whether anyone can tell us where it is located? I'll check back later in the day, to monitor the guesses and to bestow a special award on the first poster that gets the correct answer. Once the location is exposed, we'll post a photo to confirm the correct answer, too. So, put on your best observation cap and let the guessing begin...

stars?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 08:06 am:

Maybe the Jacobsville lighthouse?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 08:08 am:

My guess would be at a WW2 memorial, or display.

By George P. Larson (Gplarson1) on Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 09:39 am:

Don't know if this counts as Calumet, but how about Lakeview Cemetary?

In front of the township office.

By Gene Carlson (Gcarlson) on Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 02:26 pm:

I just love technology. I am in Illinois and found it using Google Maps street view. Just lucky,

Mary says: That's hilarious, Gene, that you went on Google Maps Street View and drove around with your mouse, until you found the flag.
That sure made me .

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 02:28 pm:

Definitely a patriotic bunch. I think we have uncovered every flag in Calumet.

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 02:28 pm:

The correct answer is the Calumet Township Office on Redjacket Road, in Calumet.
Some interesting facts about this HISTORIC flag, that Liz and her husband
Peter pointed out for us:
Note that it has even rows of stars. It's the 48-star flag which was flown until July 4, 1960. An interesting sidenote that Liz and Peter mentioned is that the 48 star flag, was the American Flag flown during the 1913-14 miner's strike here in Calumet. How appropriate for the 100th anniversary next year!
Thanks for playing along and congrats to our winner!

Since Liz sent me these photos a few days ago, she emailed and said that Peter had spotted a 48 star flag flying over the Elks building, too. We're wondering if there might be some significance for flying them in Calumet right now? Anyone?
Thanks for playing along and congrats to our winner!

Way ta go Gene!! Congratulations!!!!!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 03:13 pm:

Mickell, there used to be 'flagpole-sitters' way back when...honest.;)

By Robert - CO (Halork) on Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 05:34 pm:

Actually, the 48-star flag was flown until July 4, 1959. The 49-star flag, signifying Alaska's admission to the union, was flown for one year from July 4, 1959-July 4, 1960, when the 50-star flag was official.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 05:54 pm:

I believe there's no law that says you have to display the 50-star Flag. The previous ones are also allowed.

Mary says: You are correct, Thomas.
The information on the following link covers the etiquette on displaying the American flag pertaining to the number of stars and flying earlier versions: Flag laws in the United States.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Thursday, July 19, 2012 - 11:00 pm:

OK, where da hecks is Redjacket Road?? Anybody got a map or a 'pretty close to.....'?

Mary says: Here's a map, courtesy of Google Maps, that should help, Ken.

Redjacket Road location.

By
Therese (Therese) on Friday, July 20, 2012 - 05:07 pm:

I have the flag that flew over my Dad's
destroyer on the day Japan surrendered.
It flew in front of my childhood home
every July Fourth. There's a few moth
holes and stains, but otherwise it's in
good condition.

By Therese (Therese) on Friday, July 20, 2012 - 05:13 pm:

Dad was part of a flotilla moving into Japanese waters for the
invasion. After the surrender they were sent to Nagasaki
Harbor and witnessed first hand the devastation wrought by
the atom bomb. All Dad ever told us was, "There were a
hundred thousand people dying and I didn't know what was
wrong and couldn't save any of them." He was a pharmacists
mate, the naval equivalent of an army medic.
