We've seen a number of different photos of the Canyon Falls, just south of L'Anse, here on the Pasty Cam, but today's photographer, Pete Rytkonen looked around and spotted some interesting formations while making the hike to the waterfalls. Some were formed by nature and the others put together by some unknown visitors. I think the most interesting one of Pete's photos is the pile of flat rocks that form a tower or chimney of sorts. Upon closer inspection, you can see it was used for a fire pit. I can just picture having the fire going and watching the smoke billow out of the spaces between the rocks... pretty neat idea.

Pete's photos are a good example of why we should enjoy the journey that takes us to where we're going, since there's always something interesting to see along the way.

Hi
I was wondering if the first and last photos are the same rock formation from the front and the back.

By Mel, MN (Mehollop) on Monday, June 25, 2012 - 09:12 am:

Kathyl - I would say yes - the roots on the small spruce/fir are the same, as are the broken stem/branch on the top of the rock, and the little maple near the front. The photographer has moved 90° clockwise.

When I look at the first photo, I see the palm of a hand with fingers reaching to the right, attempting to grab that person!:O Watch out!!

I don't know if I could sit on that rock with all of those cracks. Remember Miners Castle?

I believe most of the rocks you're seeing are slates and sandstones; it's been a while since I've been there, so I don't remember exactly. What I do remember is that they are part of the Huron Mountains, which are stunning to hike...
