A week or so ago, we went out in search of some of those yummy Morel Mushrooms, with our grandson. He was fascinated with the ones that are classified as "False" Morels, as they're much bigger and more plentiful where we were "hunting". He's holding one in the first photo. Whereas the second photo shows you what a true Morel Mushroom looks like. You can see the difference in the shape and even the coloring. If you don't know the difference, then you're better off leaving them all in the woods, as the false morels can be toxic, with recent evidence showing there may be long term health risks if you eat them.

The third photo shows you the measly amount of morels we found that day... I think we were a bit early for them, as the day was cool and I know they like to pop out after a good rain and then sunshine. We had so much fun traipsing through the woods with our grandson, though, we didn't even care that we only found a few.

Then when we got back to our yard, the last photo is the scene we saw. Our cats are quite resourceful and know how to get a drink when they're thirsty. Sure made us smile to see that and topped off a good day with a good chuckle.

Nice outing!
Suggestion Mary: You shoulf paint the bird bath black and white, the same as your cat.

I've never had morels but since I love mushrooms, I'd like to try them.
Mary, your cat looks something like my "Tippy", except Tippy has more white.....with black 'clown buttons' down his back and a white 'tip' on the end of his black tail.

I have always been a bit afraid to trust my judgement about wild mushrooms. Perhaps i will give it a go next year. Great pics! Your grandson is adorable!

I agree with you 'Jaby', I meant to say something about Mary's grandson in my earlier post....he has the most precious eyes!

When my wife and I visited Hungarian falls in 1997 the woods on the north west corner of the trestle and creek were literally covered every foot or so with Beef Steak False morels. I wanted to scream because I could not pick them.
