When lunch time rolls around for Mike Schneider, he doesn't sit eating in the conference room. No, he heads out to walk along the beach, near Sandpoint Rd. at the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. That's just what he was doing last week one day, when he spotted a different sort of cloud out over Lake Superior. It seemed to be reaching out from the sky to touch the water. Quite an unusual cloud formation at that. Maybe we'll be lucky and have one of our cloud buffs, fill us in on what type of cumulus this could be.
In the meantime, back to Mike and his lunch walk near Munising...he told me this, about spending it on the shores of Gitche Gumee: "Each day there has been so very different, very warm one day and then just freezing with the wind the next, but the birds are always singing and everything is getting green!"
I guess that means spring really is "just around the corner".

Good Morning! The color of the water in both photos is spectacular! The cloud is interesting. I suppose it could be a water spout?

About the weird cloud, I'm definitely not an expert, but it almost looks like water vapor from the lake is being drawn up into a cloud. Maybe Mary's caption "cloud formation" has two accurate meanings here?

Marianne, that was my first thought. Saw a waterspout in the Gulf, off the coast of Biloxi, MI one time and it looked much like this except the sky was dark and rainy.

Clarification....that's Biloxi, Mississippi, not Michigan. For a minute I forgot the abbreviation for Miss. So many states begin with an 'M'.:)

Charlie and Shirley, I love pasties too, and can't get enough of them. But hamburgers are great too. Especially if you live an the Detroit area. Here there are Marcus Burgers. Marcus restaurant goes back to 1929. They are steamed and served on a hotdog bun with relish, onions and mustard. Yum!

I don't think that's a waterspout — there's definitely no cloud rotation present, as there would be in a waterspout. 'Tis more likely a small rain shower, from a faster moving cloud above, that's being dragged along the lake due to friction and surface tension. Neat pictures!

Off subject again.....I prefer Krystal hamburgers, much like White Castle, but better.;)

There was a White Castle about a half-mile from where I lived in Detroit, at McNichols (Six Mile) and Woodward. Now there is one a half-mile from where I live in Troy, MI.

White Castle. Many years ago in college I wrote a brief tongue-in-cheek analysis on the neo-Corbusian architecture of the 'Chateau Blanc' restaurant chain. Glossy white surfaces, rectilinear organization and clerestory windows is all I recall. Now I'm not even sure how to spell 'clerestory'.

Alex. I grew up in Highland Park, near six and wooward, and I do not remember a white castles being there. The one I remember, as a kid, was at 8 and woodward. That is the one my mom use to go to when we were kids. The hamburgers at that time were 10 cents and a little cup of ketchup came in the flip-top box of french fries. I am quite sure if there was one closer to home, she would have went to it.

from my back porch. The original one was torn down
and rebuilt on a plot of land next door to it that
use to be an old (and I mean old) Florist
(Websters?). Its my hubby's favorite place. I can
only eat them now and then.

Thanks for all the comments! The cloud stayed like this for about 30-45 minutes and then quickly dissolved. The sun was behind me in and out of the clouds abit which made the water color just beautiful!

The White Castle building at Six and Woodward is still there, not a White Castle tho. Marcus Burgers is in Warren now and still in Detroit on Marcus and Six. Would go there at 12.01 Saturday morning while working midnights at Lynch Road Assy. Boss would buy everyone several of the long burgers in hot dog buns.

MICHEAL; Do you kinda remember where it was on 6 and woodward or what it was near or other things around where it was located? Was it on the north side of 6 mile? I just do not remember a white castle. I am 57 yrs. old and I just do not remember a white castles there... Was it in the vicinity of palmer park?

Bates Burgers in Livonia 5 Mile & Farmington Rd, THEY'RE GREAT! But so is the Castle on 8 Mile & Grand River or up in Pontiac or Canton.

Before we moved to the U.P., we use to take a ride to Belle Isle and stop at the white castle on Michigan Ave., down from the old tiger stadium.

Sdcferndale; I remember the old white castle bldg. before they built the new one. It was a lot smaller then the new ones are. I use to work at that one, (8 and woodward) longggggg time ago.

I found a pretty good way to cook the frozen ones. Get a good dried onion and put them in some water. After they soak, re-hydrate, put them in a pan,like a frying pan. Take the top of the bun off the frozen hambuger and put the meat side down on the onions and put the top of the bun on top of that, put a lid on them and let them steam. Comes out a lot better than nuking them. That is the way they cook them anyway.

The Original Marcus is still at McNichols and Mt. Elliot. The burgers are made in a pan covered with water which eventially turns to gravy. Basically they are cooked in their own juices. A bowl of relish, a bowl of onions and mustard is put on the U-shaped counter.
There is a Marcus restauraunt at 14 mile & Ryan and a newer one called Marcus Grille On VanDyke between 25 and 26 Mile Roads.

There are white castles all over Missouri now. It's a staple here.
