Mother Nature gives us some of her best here UP North. One day we can have subzero temperatures and snow falling to beat the band. The next day it's sunny and 35°, almost like she can't make up her mind. That's how winter goes here in the U.P. Shawn and Brian Malone recently captured one of her moods in Marquette, when the sun was just coming up, shedding light over the Harbor and illuminating the Marquette Lighthouse. While the brightness of the sunrise in this photo gives you the illusion of a glowing warmth, Shawn tells me that this was actually snapped a week ago, on a very cold morning when the temperature was -1°F.

This is a perfect example of why folks endure the cold and snow of living here in the U.P. Some recent comments on Shawn and Brian's photos have summed it up quite well..."Imagine waking up to that beauty every day." and my favorite, "Your photos make me want to hug the U.P. Thank you!"

To fully appreciate the rebirth and beauty of Earth come Spring, one must endure Winter.

Oh what a picture. 39 degrees in southern Michigan.

A big plus is that so many of the beautiful places in the U.P. are not drawn down on any map;
true places never are.

Nice pic!

O Earth, O Earth, return!
Arise from out the dewy grass;
Night is worn,
And the morn
Rises from the slumberous mass.

Awesome photo this morning!! That's so true gormfrog. There was this guy in the bank where I work yesterday, bragging that he's going to take a trip to go down the Rhine River, and he's telling us about all these beautiful places he's been to in the world. I couldn't resist telling him how I have no desire to leave our country. I asked him if he's ever been to the UP to see all the beauty there is there. Of course, he hadn't. Well, he doesn't know what he's missing. There is too much beauty right in our own back yard for me to want to go off to other countries. But that's me!

Hi
Debs, I agree that there's a lot to see in this country and in Michigan. I've lived in Michigan all my life and there are still some places I haven't seen in the UP (except in these posts).

That photo would make a beautiful painting! It sure does 'say' "COLD", though. Temp. here is 30F this morning.....cold enough for my old bones. Do those of you who live way UP there, have to have plug-in heaters for your car engines? We did in N.D.

By Karen Benton (Nerakthenice178) on Friday, January 27, 2012 - 10:07 am:

Even though this winter is adding insult to injury for Michigan's economy, I wouldn't live anywhere else!

I must say that I have been to the Rhine valley in Germany and while it is very pretty, the Mosel Valley is by far my favourite in Germany (of course that would have nothing to do with the wineries that stretch for miles along the valley walls..... ;-)

But, for the "all-around" package, it's hard to beat the UP!!

By Mike Schneider (Upmike) on Friday, January 27, 2012 - 12:28 pm:

Nice capture of the Beauty of the UP!
and Shirley I've never had a plugin for my vehicle but, I know when the base was here we would plug in some of our alert vehicles way back when.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, January 27, 2012 - 01:28 pm:

Yeah, Mike, I would imagine so, like "Engine, don't fail me now!".

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, January 27, 2012 - 06:10 pm:

Beautiful.

A Genealogist's Prayer

Lord, help me dig into the past
And sift the sands of time
That I might find the roots that made
This Family Tree of mine

Lord, help me trace the ancient roads
On which my fathers trod
And led them through so many lands
To find our present sod

Lord, help me find a dusty book,
Or ancient manuscript
That's safely hidden now away
In some forgotten crypt

Lord, let it bridge the gap that haunts
My soul when I can't find
That missing link between some name

That ends the same as mine.
