When lunch time rolls around for Bob Gilreath, he doesn't let a little snow and cold stop him from getting out to enjoy the scenery around Houghton, no sir. He sets out and takes his trusty camera along, too. On this day last week, his stops included a look back in history, at the mining buildings that remain in Ripley, then he took in a nice sunny view of Mount Ripley all covered in white, waiting for the skiers to be zipping down her runs. No walk along Houghton's waterfront would be complete without a shot of the Lift Bridge. It's like a "must have" in the photo department, especially when the ice is looking so shiny all around it. And lastly, Bob snapped a shot looking back where he came from, showing you a good portion of the community dock area along the waterfront. It's good to get out there to enjoy the fresh, crisp air and rejuvenate for the afternoon portion of the day.

Nice pictures. I like all of them, but, I especially like Mt. Ripley. The sign they have to the entrance reads, Mont Ripley.

Nice pictures!!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, January 9, 2012 - 08:19 am:

Great pictures! I would love to have Bob's type of lunch break! Lucky guy!

Its been a long time since we have seen such clear Ice on the portage. The ice in these shots was only about 3 days old, so be careful out there.

FYI the top shot makes a great Background, I'm looking at it every day on my work machine ;-)

I forgot. The sign to the entrance is new. Nice sign. ;O)

What is it about winter pictures that they look so calm and peaceful.

Nice pics!

What is all that white stuff? :-)

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Monday, January 9, 2012 - 09:13 am:

I notice that every view has a soft reflection in the ice. Thanks Bob for a view I'll never get to see. But next time I'm UP there I must find the places to view each shot myself. I've never tried to see anything but the drive thru downtown. This goes on my list to check out.

I knew these were "Bob Shots" no more than I saw them. I too have his kind of lunch break, but the scenery here just can't compare; everytime I go for a walk around my office "In the ghetto" by Elvis plays in my head......

I love your photos, Bob G! My youngest son, a Tech undergrad, went skiing with friends on Ripley yesterday afternoon. I saw on Tech's webcam yesterday afternoon, that Ripley was busy with skiers all over the slopes then. :-)

Janie said she'd like to have a lunch break like yours, Bob, I'd like to have your legs and stamina! Beautifully cold shots! Thanks for bringing the outdoors in, for us nonadventurers.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, January 9, 2012 - 11:12 am:

I wish I could walk at lunch time. They don't even have sidewalks in Bloomfield Hills, or public parks for that matter. I guess pedestrians muck-up the landscape in hoity-toity land.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, January 9, 2012 - 12:55 pm:

A couple nice things about my job is I have a company car, and I make my own schedule/hours. I can park my co. car, take a break from driving, such as a walk for a short time, the bad thing, there's no scenery like these pictures!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, January 9, 2012 - 01:12 pm:

Well, my goodness, Janie, you can't have everything!;) Sounds like a neat job though.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, January 9, 2012 - 01:15 pm:

It really is a good job for me. Great co-workers as well!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Monday, January 9, 2012 - 02:41 pm:

A fine Winter Day.

Mary, I know this is off-subject for this page but I've been wondering, do you or anyone else have an update on Amy? Thank you in advance.

Mary says: I haven't really been hearing regular updates, Shirley, but went to the facebook page for Amy and found this:

1/6/12 10:00am Amy was really active yesterday, moving arms legs and opening eyes. She's resting today. Looking at a possible move to a different level of care. Ths is the new post on the care pages, Great News.

I haven't been able to sign in to the Care Pages where the updates are, so that's all I can tell you right now. Please continue to keep her and her family in your prayers.

Heard on the news today that only 16% of the country
is covered in snow (as compared to 70% at this time
last year). It's not surprise to me that the UP is
the one spot in the US that still has snow! :)
Awesome pics! Makes me wish I was home in the
Keweenaw!

Nice shot of the Quincy smelter. My grandfather worked there
back in the '60s. He and my grandmother lived on Vivian Street in
Hancock.
