By Susan, Fl on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 06:10 am:

It's cool (for FLorida!) here this morning....wish us luck...having a garage sale when I get home this morning...It's gonna take 3 men and a boy plus a LOT of little old ladies to clean us out! We're more into making room than money...stuff priced to GO...like tables and bookcases for a buck each. We'll see how it goes. Everyone have a good one...it's Friday!

By Heikki, Michigan on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 06:48 am:

Morning all. To Susan in Fl: I'm sure you are not aware, but the term "3 men and a boy" was considered a degrogatory slam towards African Americans back in the pre-civil rights days. Just wanted to let you know. :)

Hey Alex,
I used to drive to from Alpharetta to Calumet for vacation (deer camp). You do not want to waste any time when you are going to gods country so your best bet is to go I-75 NORTH to Chattanooga then I-24 west to Nashville there get on I-65 north all the way to South Bend Indiana take the tri state express way to the toll road around Chicago...don't hit this at rush hourand have lots of change that will run into U.S.141 thru Wisconsinand in to the U.P. you will hit U.S.41
at Covington jct. from there you are only 70 miles or so from the Keeweenaw. Save the scenic route for when you have to back to Georgia. It has been a few years but this was the easy way home for me. Have a good trip one of these days i'll b headed that way myself.

A little Friday humor for you

Catholic and Lutheran friends - this is good!

Eino was an older single gentleman who was born and
raised a Lutheran, and each Friday night after work he
would fire up his outdoor grill and cook a venison
steak.

Now all of Eino's neighbors were Catholic - and since
it was Lent they were forbidden from eating meat on
Fridays and ate fish . The delicious aroma from the grilled
venison steaks was causing such a problem for the Catholic
faithful that they finally talked to their priest.

The priest came to visit Eino, and suggested that Eino
convert to Catholicism. After several classes and much
study, Eino attended Mass and as the priest sprinkled
holy water over Eino, he said "You were born a
Lutheran and raised a Lutheran, but now you are
Catholic."

Eino's neighbors were greatly relieved, until Friday
night arrived, and the wonderful aroma of grilled
venison filled the neighborhood. The priest was called
immediately by the neighbors and as he rushed into
Eino's yard, clutching a rosary and prepared to scold
Eino, he stopped in amazement and watched......

There stood Eino, clutching a small bottle of water
which he carefully sprinkled over the grilling meat,
and chanting:

"You were born a deer, and raised a deer, but now you
are a walleye!"

I've taken that route driving from Chicago to Florida and it is the best and quickest way. The route from Chicago to the Keweenaw - I would take the Tri-State tollway (I-294) to (I-94) and follow north into Wisconsin. In Milwaukee take 43 North instead of following I-94/41 North. Saves almost an hour (since you cut through Milwaukee instead of looping all the way around)and near Green Bay you will connect with 41/141 again. Have a safe trip!

Alicia, I laughed right out loud. Thanks for the giggle. That Eino is one clever and resourceful dude.

By sur5er on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 10:49 am:

Alicia,

Thank you for my morning chuckle. :) Trust me, I needed that...I have been stuck behind this computer putting in 16 hour days for the last two weeks...less than one week to go (hopefully) and this project I have been working on will be done. Oh yeah!!!!!!!!

By sur5er on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 11:02 am:

Bruce,

How are China and her puppy doing?

By Mr. Bill on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 11:27 am:

Alex,

You can wack off another 45 minutes if you take the County backroads off at Pembine, going around both Niagara and Iron Mountain, and ending up in Covington. It's easy to do, but awkward to type. Let me know if you're interested.

By Roudy Mi on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 12:36 pm:

If we use all the short cuts any chance we can get there before we leave?

By Dave, laurium on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 12:59 pm:

It is just a gorgeous day in the Copper Country. Looking forward to a great hockey game tomorrow between calumet and Hancock to see who starts the journey downstate. Best of luck to both teams, but "GO KINGS"!!!

By pungvait up on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 01:14 pm:

if u take too many short-cuts you'll never get here.

By Lowell Mo. on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 01:30 pm:

That Joke about Eino reminds me of my brother. My Sister-in-law was Catholic but my brother had to have his meat on friday so he would get some water on his hand and sprinkle it on the meat saying i now baptise you fish. That was many many years ago so that joke remined me of that.
Its nice here in Missouri today. 57 right now and supposed to go up in the middle 60's not bad considering it was in the high 20's two days ago.

Whatever happened with Kennecott Mining Company trying to develop a mine at the headwaters of the Yellow Dog and Salmon Trout rivers in the Huron Mountains? Its been a while since I've heard anything about that.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 02:10 pm:

Thank you, Mr. Bill... and you are funny, Roudy Mi.

I am collecting the advice given to me, so if you want to send it to my E-Mail, feel free, unless it's too much trouble!

We need to pick up Fran from GA and go U.P. there for a week. .

Actually, I am really considering trying to move up there... Living so far away is tough, because you can't just go back and forth and look at houses everyday!

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 02:14 pm:

Miss Placed Yooper on Guam... Thank you for the travel advice!!!! I will keep this in mind! Thanks for taking the time out to write that up for me... Or should I say write that U.P. for me? :)

Alex

WARNING to you Tri-State Tollway (I-294) takers, when going around Chicago...

January 1st, 2005 the tolls DOUBLED everywhere if you are paying with coins/cash!
If you have an I-pass account with them, the tolls remained the same...

40 cent tolls are now 80 cents
50 cent tolls are now $1.00
and the Waukegan Toll Plaza (near the Wisconsin border)is now $1.50!

$ChaChing$ goes the tollway authorities bank account

Hey Mary! Wave at all the Michigan plates. We are in Jacksonville, headed to see Kim of Lansing and her spouse. 69 today and a beautiful sun. Back home at the end of the month. Stay warm up there.

Mary says: Don't laugh now, but we actually do check out all the plates from Michigan and Wisconsin, to see if we can tell where abouts they're from. The closest we've come to home plates is someone with Wisconsin plates, and Green Bay dealership! All the Michigan ones we've seen were from downstate. I'll be sure to wave at all the Michigan plates we see from here on out! :->

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 10:33 pm:

Sure... If he sees your message, maybe he'll just post it here! :) (To B in GB).

Heikki...thank you so much for the heads up...have been using that expression all my life and never heard that. My sincere apologies to any who may have taken offence...there was certainly none intended. By the way, whoever it was that showed up did a great job....we were nearly wiped out in the first couple hours...not much left for the early risers tomorrow! :)

By Susan, Fl on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 11:37 pm:

Marsha Genesee....am in Clearwater, but your daughter may have found me anyways! :) Used to be in Genesee...born in Flint and grew up (Sort of...til I was 27) in Fenton. Best place south of the bridge in the world!
