Mary Drew, remembering from down south on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 02:29 am:

A tradition born years ago here at Pasty Central, we take this last day of the month to honor and remember those of our loved ones and friends who have departed:

Fern Bessner
Bob "Cubby" Carlson
Jeffrey Homola
Bob Sweeney
Hugh Charron
Those who gave all in the service of their country

Feel free to add the names of special folks you would like to keep in memory this month.
By
Charlie at Pasty Central on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 02:53 am:

Hugh Charron was a long-time resident of Still Waters, and we will always remember him fondly.

Today we complete seven years of the Pasty Cam. During those years, many Still Waters residents have appeared on these pages, most of whom have passed on. For me, the archives of this daily feature represent a scrapbook of remembrance - of the places, the beauty, the history - and especially the people - who have enriched the lives of those of us living in this tiny corner of our great land.

Ed Metteri
Gert Keranen
Evelyn Alatalo
Kathryn Sullivan

By JO, NC on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 10:02 am:

Can anyone help with the following:

I was born and raised in Houghton (left in 1957), and lived in Beacon Hill in the early '40s. My father was the agent at the RR Depot. I distinctly remember going to school there. The school was right across the road from the church on the road to Freda. I can remember standing on top of the "Big Hill" watching to see if the teacher could make it up after an overnight storm. We had a lot of no-school days until Blazer's sawmill started putting a team of horses at the base to pull her car up. Have found references on the Copper Range site that Beacon Hill never had a school, so I'm looking for back-up.

By JO, NC on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 10:31 am:

Gary, Thanks. I was up there a few years ago, and took my aunt out to Freda one Sunday morning for breakfast. Just a few people left where Beacon Hill was. Actually, I had a problem even finding it with the trestle gone. I'll be in Houghton for a week in August, and will probably go out there for a day and see what I can find. Might even check with the Stanton Township schools, and see if they have any old records. Find out if I did any better in 1st-2d grade than I did in later years, LOL.

By ra on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 03:27 pm:

Last Sunday evening, when Hunter S. Thompson committed suicide, He wrote the end to his own story. Just as with his leads, this was a man who knew how to write a pretty good kicker. It was said he asked that his ashes be shot out of a cannon, and The Aspen Times are taking essays. The Hunter S. Thompson blast-off cannon contest is under way. In 100 words or less, "Why should your cannon be used to blast Dr. Hunter S. Thompson's cremated remains into the sky?"
Hunter S. Thompson taught us "When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.
I can remember going to Las Vegas and trying to relive “Fear and Loathing”, it almost killed me and I came nowhere close to matching the insanity of the original. He will be missed for his political insight, sharp sports reporting, and good solid American humor.

By BT,TC on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 03:36 pm:

The photo is sunset over the Big Manistique lake in mid February a year ago. Many, many fantastic sunsets have been enjoyed from this spot. It's fun to watch all the neighbors drop what they are doing at sunset to watch.

By Janine, St. Clair Shores on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 04:47 pm:

Laura FL, your message about Pete Lukonich brought a tear to my eye. If we are thinking of the same Pete, I remember a kind, old man who lived across the street from us in Ahmeek, often waving or telling us to quit playing in the street. Mom always said, "Its not a real snow storm unless you can't see Pete's house!"

By Lisa, Ypsilanti, MI on Monday, February 28, 2005 - 11:33 pm:

My mom, Betty Cassette, died on February 18 at the age of 89. She was born in Lake Linden, grew up on "G" Street (in the house her grandfather built), and was graduated from LLHHS in 1934. She moved briefly to Milwaukee, Chicago, and then Detroit, where she met and married my dad. She spent the rest of her life in the Detroit area, but we visited my Grandpa Joe Cassette in Lake Linden every summer until he died.

My mom was the oldest of six kids and outlived all of her siblings.

I would love to hear from anyone who knew or remembers her.

Lisa
