For a moment there I thought it was John Glen at Cape Canaveral... wrong Florida, similar helmet. Carl Killunen dusted off his shoebox to bring us these two memories from the 1970's. I imagine the kids in the second photo are in their 30's now.

Temps are actually in the 40's this morning here in the U.P. Last night Edie and I had dinner at the Mariner North in Copper Harbor, and by the time we made it back to Eagle River, the car thermometer read 47! But the trails have a good base, and we expect more snow by this evening.

Thinking of warmer days, there's a new video from PastyFest 2004 (Real Player required) on the Main Street Calumet website, which took place on a rainy July 4 last year. In the coming week we'll have a joint announcement with the Main Street folks about PastyFest 2005. Stay tuned :o)

That's great! I wonder if there's a Michigan, Florida! Hmm, gotta got dig out my atlas.

By troll with connections, Mi on Sunday, February 6, 2005 - 07:53 am:

There's a Michigan, No. Dakota and a Michigan, Vermont/ But no Michigan in Florida. Only Michiganders. However there is a La Belle, Florida. Wonder if they have a lake?

By Mr. Bill on Sunday, February 6, 2005 - 08:44 am:

There's also a Lac La Belle, Wisconsin.

By Jim, MI on Sunday, February 6, 2005 - 08:44 am:

Brent. The sign is actually for Florida Location. It's right outside of Laurium on M 26 going towards Lake Linden.

Somewhere I still have a 45 rpm record{remember those} of the arctic cat promational song "this is the year to go Arctic".
I got it from Carl Killunen in the 70's..I cannnot get it out of my head now!!"this is the year.. the year to go Arctic..This is the year of the cat!"

Now that is flyin..............although a little too close to the ground for me.........

By Herb/NW/Wis on Sunday, February 6, 2005 - 10:24 am:

Lost about half of our snow here in the past 3 days. Bare
ground showing in places. Turning colder today....

By Sven on Sunday, February 6, 2005 - 11:55 am:

Just want to wish the soldiers of the 107th engineers A company out of Calumet/Baraga good luck on there way to Iraq today.

By Missin the UP from NJ on Sunday, February 6, 2005 - 12:09 pm:

Good Morning! Those look like happy people! And who wouldn't be? Playing in the snow.

There's a Florida, New York not far over the border from us. They have one of the greatest old fashioned Hardware stores there! You know the type, with something for everyone in the family and "if you don't see it- ask" attitude. Love it!

Happy Sno-going!! :)

By Mel, Kansas on Sunday, February 6, 2005 - 12:14 pm:

Rain here today, ice again tomorrow. Haven't seen a single snow machine down here - not even tracks through the drifts after the little bit of snow that we did have. Guess folks just don't have 'em. Saw only one snowblower out for a workout (with only a scant inch of snow on the driveway to throw), and they cleared the campus walks with a brush.

*sigh* Missin' da UP.

By RCW on Sunday, February 6, 2005 - 12:25 pm:

What ever happened to the Florida sign. Doesn't seem to be there anymore??

By copper country resident on Sunday, February 6, 2005 - 12:34 pm:

Nice pictures today, it't too bad people are getting killed on snowmobiles today. They are too high powered and deadly. 1000 cc engines made, why? Can't go out on a Sunday afternoon
and enjoy a ride at 45-50 mph without someone coming right for at 80 mph and just about running you off the trail. The snowmobile companies should be held liable also, but that's
my opinion.

By Mark Gilles, Lakeland/Florida on Sunday, February 6, 2005 - 01:54 pm:

The good old Arctic Cat Pantera 5000. Blew my dad's up during the old "Radar Run" on the Lake Linden Sands. Nice weather here in the Super Bowl State. Maybe the Lions will be the first team in NFL history to be in and host the Super Bowl next year.............lol.

By copper country resident on Sunday, February 6, 2005 - 02:19 pm:

Remember the snowmobile races at tha Maple Leaf Inn on Bootjack Rd? Went to those a few times.
The older Arctic Cats were still good machines.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Sunday, February 6, 2005 - 03:01 pm:

Had rain over night. Gloomy here today.

By ILMHitCC on Sunday, February 6, 2005 - 09:31 pm:

Mmmmm..... Saturday night prime rib at the Mariner, mmmmm....

Sorry to have missed you for dinner last night, Charlie! Must be time to make a trip.

By BCT,mi on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 02:24 pm:

Curious as to why you think the snow mobile companies should be held responsible?

By downstate don on Monday, February 7, 2005 - 05:57 pm:

Yes..I remember the snowmobile races at the Maple
Leaf..many years ago. They were fun to watch also
remember Florida Location where I was born and
raised.

By BCT,mi on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 - 10:25 am:

Hey Don did you run in the races at the Leaf?

By eleanor k. L.L. on Sunday, February 13, 2005 - 07:02 pm:

That little boy (Mark K.) on that Kitty Cat is selling Arctic Cats now. His sister (Jodi) is a R.N. down in Detroit. They are my Grandchildren.

By zrt600 WI on Wednesday, February 16, 2005 - 07:09 pm:

I don't think snowmobile manuf. should be responsible for our peoples actions. If you want to be irresponsible then thats your problem. Have to remember everyone drives different. Anyway I'd be one of those guy flying by too....... My choice not manuf.

By Jason C. Brewer on Monday, February 21, 2005 - 02:28 pm:

Can someone settle a dispute for me? Is "Florida Location" legally part of Laurium Villiage or Calumet Township? --Or more importantly, what was the case in the 1930's and 1940's?

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Monday, February 7, 2022 - 07:58 am:

I didn't know there was a Florida in the copper country.
