Good Morning from Clearwater, FL. It too is chilly here; however, it can't compare to what you've got up there. Have a nice day.....keep up the good work Yooper!

By Susan, Fl on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 - 06:39 am:

Yup, it's chilly here in Clearwater....have been here too many years....try to convince the natives that it's only brisk and they look at you like you have two heads! Don't know if I've been here too long (since 76), or if I'm just getting old....but it does seem a bit nippy. However, that doesn't deter me one little iota from intending to move to the UP when I retire. Guess I'll just have to re-aclimate. Can't wait...never liked the heat of summer even as a kid...keep warm, and snuggle in bed as long as you can this morning!

Were the Hiawatha Tracks picture used for a "last day of the month" pic?

The shot of the tracks appeared on this day (Jan 18) in 2002

I could use a little help. Is Em'mee Finn for Grand mother?
Thanks B

By Tom, Green Bay on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 - 08:53 am:

Don't know how to spell EM'Me or Ammi, but it means old lady in Finnish. But in an endearing way, not rude.

By Tom, Green Bay on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 - 10:01 am:

Here is an interesting rule in the Finnish language. A noun cannot begin with two consonants, and must end with a vowel. When new words are added to the language they must be modified to meet those rules. Thus when the word glass was added many, many years ago it had to become lassi. I had a friend in Finland who was a linguist and tried to explain all the rules. Too complex for me to get all that.

By sur5er, Indiana on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 - 10:09 am:

Good morning everyone, it's a beautiful -5 degrees here on the shores of Lake Michigan in Indiana. We got a couple of inches of snow last night, and it was one of those nights where the sky was lit up. I was outside at midnight shoveling the snow..it was so beautiful and peaceful.

Susan from FL, my daughter and her fiance moved down to Clearwater this past summer...and she is not a happy camper without the snow. She is now ready for them to move back to Michigan...unfortunately her fiance has a two year committment with the PD down there, so she is anxiously counting the days until she is back home.

BCT,mi & Tom, Green Bay:
How's about Finnish: "mummi" = English: "granny"?

By Bthecute1, San Jose on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 - 11:06 am:

Good morning all. We have a very thick fog here in San Jose today. People are driving very slow. It is so thick it probably will take most of the day to clear up. I must say though, it is better than all the snow you have in the Upper Peninsula. I learned to drive in the snow, uphill, with a stick shift. Not fun!

It seems to me I heard this somewhere that there are no prepositions in Finnish hence the translation to English left out prepositions? That would be where the "let's go town" might have come from. Then it just became part of the colloquilisms of the UP.

When we were kids we called our grandma, "Mummu".

By knowsomefinn on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 - 03:04 pm:

mummo - grandmother

By FRNash/PHX, AZ on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 - 03:28 pm:

finnboy & knowsomefinn
Yeah, fer shur, definitely - I jes' thought "mummi" was closer to what BCT,mi and Tom, Green Bay were getting at.

Grandma: isoäiti(formal), mummi, mummo, mummu (all informal/familiar)

I'm still trying to figure out what Marsy, MI was referring to - I didn't see any discussion of missing prepositions here!?

But of course what she says is true, there are no prepositions in Finnish - all those lovely Finnish case endings (suffixes) provide that information. (There are at least fifteen cases! J)

Hey Yooper, I love your fire! You certainly add that much needed humor to our day. After a stressful day at the office, I do look forward to Pasty Cam.

Hope you are doing well downstate don. 'Haven't heard from you in quite awhile.

Isoäiti quickly became just Iso at my house -- she's been that for more than 40 years!

By Candy, CA on Tuesday, January 18, 2005 - 05:25 pm:

Dave, I just love your little people!

Hello. I was wondering what has happened to wall paper of the week? It seems to be behind a couple of weeks, for some time now. Thanks

I think this sight is great! Just a note- we had -53 degrees up here in beautiful northeastern Minnesota yesterday. I often wonder why my ancestors came here.
