With all the talk earlier this week about skating, ice rinks and such, this picture by Jamie Harter, brought those things to mind again. Although I don't recommend going out on Superior to do any carving with your blades, even with the smooth looking ice exposed here. A person is better off viewing the glory displayed, from the shore where you can stay safe and dry. Just a sliver of sunshine reflecting off the shore ice, I'm guessing this was taken towards the end of the day. Can't think of a better way to end a day or week of work, than staring out at the Big Lake!

The big lake will occationally freeze over (every 20 years or so). This event is usually accompanied by a month or two of below 0 temperatures though!

Did anyone get out and get some shots yesterday with that clear blue sky. I wish I had my camera with me.

It's been an odd week, the weather man said it was 25 degrees warmer in Marquette than in Grayling. 7 in Marquette, -18 in Grayling this morning. Yesterday it was -25 in Grayling. At these temps, the big lake could freeze over!

A hearty second to Mary's caution about staying on shore. Although it can be fun to climb on the shoreline ice ridges, the lake-facing sides are typically smooth ice with no handholds. If you fall over the front edge into the water, your chances of getting back up are just about zero. Stay safe!

This is a glorious picture...I'm never disappointed by the photos posted here. However I'm content to watch them via web and enjoy our milder temps in Florida! BRRR! Too cold for my thinned out blood on Superior in January!

this photo makes me miss the Keewenaw so much, living in Grand Rapidds for 15 years has not eased the pain of not seeing Miss Superior!

I am so fortunate to be able to spend the summers on her shores, June cannot get here quick enough!

60 years ago we used to ski on the ice banks along the lake in Marquettee. One day three of us went over a huge ice bridge out near the edge! As we moved on a short way, the whole bridge fell into the lake. Our parents didn't hear this story 'till we had kids of our own.

I lived in Menominee in the 1980's. We used to drive out on the ice three to five miles to the Perch grounds. It was not unusual to see fifty cars out there. I stopped going out when one day the pressure crack we drove over on boards, opened up to about five feet wide. We had to drive along the ice opening until we found a spot where the crack was closed.

Joe Finn, I was glad to read that was the last time you were out driving on the ice! Nothing more frightening then changing conditions when out on deep water. Gives my chills just thinking about it.

I know this sounds ultra weird, but I would LOVE seeing a few photos of Superior in her Raging Glory. I love storms, and would love to watch one come in over Suprior. From a safe distance of course, and from the shelter of a warm abode.

Down here in SE Michigan it seems the Coast Guard and local police are always having to go out on the ice to rescue stranded ice fishermen on Lake St. Clair, when the ice they are on turns into an ice floe. There was talk of making them pay for the expense, because such incidents are invariably preceded by warnings from the Coast Guard to STAY OFF the ice.

Regarding falling through the ice...

This could save your life if you ever find yourself in such a situation, or if you are faced with rescuing someone else who is. Here's an educational video¹ from the Discovery Channel on Surviving a Fall Through the Ice

No, it is not weird that you like to watch storms come in off the lakes. It is quite beautiful, (when watched from safety). We live on Lake Michigan, and I love wactching the waves crashing into shore, when we have really windy days.

One day, I had to laugh at hubby's ex wife. She called me from work because she wanted me to get her some pics of the waves/lake during an extremely windy day. :)

Another beautiful time to visit the lakes...especially for some great photos, is when you suddenly have a very warm day in the winter, while the lake is still frozen. The cold air from the temp of the ice mixing with the warm temps of the day, causes an almost mystic mist/fog.

We dealt with the same type of fools out on Lake Erie all the time. Something about 'unsafe ice conditions' that draws those expensive SUV's and trucks to the not quite still frozen lake.

Someone told me that the Coast Guard had rescued two men from an ice floe in the nick of time....only to have them crying about their truck that had sunk. Duh!

I agree, they should be able to fine them the cost of the recovery.

Ugh, I can't even walk onto an ice covered lake, let alone drive on it.

Here on Lake Michigan, we have shelf ice, which is extremely unsafe...signs posted everywhere, up and down the beaches. But no matter, when you go down to the beach, there are people who ignore the signs (what does the DNR know anywho), and walk out on the ice...with their kiddies in tow.

I checked out the pasty shop as soon as they opened up. I was surprised to find out they were the children of Joe Barbera. His brother Red Barbera had a pasty shop in Wakefield for years. As you know they have both passed on. Joe opened his shop in 1947 in Ironwood. Why it took so long to open a shop in Rhinelander, I can't figure out.

I grew up in Ironwood and played little league bb for Joe's Pasty shop in the early 80's and my best friend married Jess Barbera and have started up their shop in Rhinelander. I saw that you lived there and figured you'd need a good pasty or two.
