Now, if Skylar Baxter hadn't told me where he was sitting on his snowmobile when he took this shot, I'd have had a tough time figuring it out. Of course it helps if you click on over to the full size file of this view. Just a warning for those of you on dial-up, it may take a bit of time to load, but it's well worth it if you'd like to see the distant details. You can pick out the Quincy Mine, a church steeple and ...wow..., I think you can even see the snow making machines hard at work on Mount Ripley! In case you haven't yet figured out where Skylar is, he's sitting on the bluff outside of South Range.

Isn't this known as Wheelkate Bluff? We used to cross country ski up the back side of the bluff and then come down the steep side - pretty exhilarating! Have a great weekend everybody!

Mornin'. That could be the post for Blacksburg VA this morning. Someone graciously sent us a couple inches of their Yupper snow and its lovely. Snow boards are out, tearing up the terrain.

Good Morning All, 2 degrees in the Lansing area @ 8:25am. Nice picture, I thought a saw a moose for a second :) The family and I are headed to Indiana today, hope to miss the Winter Storm Watch coming this way to dump 4 - 8 inches of snow on us. Have a fun and safe weekend all.

Yes, that is Whealkate Bluff. I've walked or should I say climbed up the front many times. Well worth it for the view. There a bluff in back of Painesdale that once you hit the top, you can see for miles and miles also.

Mike, I hope that you are going to Southern Indiana, as we are "forecasted" to get 8 - 12 inches here in Northern Indiana tonight, and then they say that it could be heavier. Good thing for the sturdy scrapers that I got at Baudino's a couple of years ago.

I have also climbed it...is quite a hike :) but the view is always great.

I love the views of the big K, from da plane. I make it up once each year around 4th of July, just for the views. (Winter I'll leave for those much tougher than me)

Yooper in Indiana...I was jealous when I read your post about southern Indiana getting hit with 8-12 inches of snow. Last night when I checked weather.com, it said we were just getting a dusting of snow. But, after reading your post this morning, I checked weather.com again, and now it says we are getting up to 10 inches of snow :) Yaaaaahooooooooo!

What a great photo. I kept guessing the Hancock side of the ridge, but just from this photo, not the rest of them. I have dial-up (so last century)and have dragged my Tech-Toot hubby screaming and kicking into this century!
At least we have snow here in the mid-mid-west, with that glaze over it all, the rabbits and squirrels waltz across with finesse.

Thanx for the head's up Yooper in Indiana, we are headed to the West Lafayette area to see my brother-in-law before he moves to Ft Myers Florida next weekend. It should be fun and I have the winter kit already in the van, snow be good to us in our travels.

Did there used to be a fire tower on this bluff or was that one closer to Trimountain? Could see a long way from the top of that tower also.

Great shot! (That "full-size" pic is as big as my ex-wife.) It's nuthin' degrees here today with a -20 wind chill, and expecting a FOOT of snow tomorrow.

WOW! That's a keeper, eh! Finally SUN in West MI! So Great to see Blue sky too... temps in the teens and still snow on the ground....Lake MI was beautiful shades of grey from dark to light and greyish/blue yesterday late afternoon..walking the shoreline at PJ Hoffmaster.....Wish I was in the Keweenaw..... Always...

The late Joe Giacoletto of Toivola owned the bluff property for many years and leased it to the state for their fire tower. Somewhere back in time (and probably over 50 years ago), Mr. Giacoletto and the state had a disagreement over the rental fees and the state dismanteled the fire tower and moved it over to the next hill near Trimountain. To the best of my knowledge, Reino Pellosmaa was the last state conservation officer to work in the tower before it was taken down in the 1970s.

As for Whealkate Bluff, at age 51 I am not old enough to remember the fire tower being there.

Gee, I hate to be a spoil sport but it is 75 degrees and sunny this morning in Hilo on the big island of Hawaii. Kind of enjoy not shovelling that white stuff every morning lately. But it is nice to be able to keep up with the Copper Country via the PastyCam. Think I will drive the Saddle Road from Hilo over to the Kona side of the island today. This road goes sort of between the two huge mountains on the island, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. I love it.

Hey Deep in Houghton It is 50 here in Montrose. Bob is surfing the deep white stuff in Telluride and drank Kona at Starbucks... Have a great time..ALOHA

This used to be a great place to ski after Mt. Ripley closed for the season. We'd hike up and ski down most of the way thru April when I was a toot at MTU in the mid-70's.

Renee in Al, Geocaching is where a container is left in a certain location, with something in it (like a little trinket or whatever small item the hiker has on hand), for others to find. When found, a person opens the cache and takes an item from it, and also leaves an item behind in the container and then places the container back where they found it, for others to find. Sorta like a treasure hunt. ;)

I'd like to know more about Wheelkate Bluff. I've seen it from many areas in the far distance. Is it open to hikers, bikers, and snowmobiles? Is it steep and hard to climb? Any info on it I'd appreciate.

Howdy all...Beautiful picture...What kind of camera was used? Can anyone tell me? 59 in Texas at 9 pm...unusually warm...soon, another day or two and it will be back to COLD..I'm awaiting a pasty in the mail...Gosh, you all sure make it sound so nice up there. I have bad memories of icey cold weather...but nice to look at...Camera?

Sandy from Texas, If you click on the link for 'full size file', and after it is loaded, click on 'Photo Properties'. A screen will appear and it will give you the information about the picture. In this case, the picture was shot using a Canon Powershot A75.

Wow, what a beautiful view for me to see after just getting my Computer back from the shop!! I have missed seeing the bridges scenes and all the other pictures.

Renee in Al, I will add a little to what Ser5er said. Geocaching is all over the world using a GPS unit you go out and find a stash usually located at a unique site. The below link will provide all the info you need. Type in your zip code on the main page and you will get all the geocaches in your area.

While living in South Range, my husband loved to climb this bluff and enjoyed the view during every season. We really enjoyed the photo!
