Throughout the U.P. you'll find many roads, streets, highways and byways, with a variety of names. This scene was found by Dave Antikainen on what he says is the Fisherman's Road. I can't say I'm familiar with that particular road, but I do like to fish, so maybe I should find out where it is. There's usually a reason behind the naming of roads, so I'm thinking this one could be named as such, because there's some good fishing to be had somewhere along it. Of course I'll have to wait until summer arrives to do any fishing, since I'm not much for going out on the ice. Even if there's no good fishing hole to be found on this stretch of road, the view alone will be worth finding and exploring it!

Neat stuff! I'm not one for the ice either. But I do enjoy fresh
fish.

Dave, Is that road near Tamarack Waterworks or Sedar Bay? Thanks for sharing this photo.

By maijaMi on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 08:02 am:

Beautiful picture.

Is that Dave in the ice fishing tent?

By Fran from Japan, MO on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 08:06 am:

Fisherman's Road runs from Calumet Waterworks Road down to Lakeshore Drive. I believe it's the first turn on the left as you head down the hill.
I've always admired this farm and the beautiful view no matter what the season.

Headed for the Keweenaw today. Can't wait to see it.

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. That is a beautiful picture. It would make a wonderful Christmas card. I see Sharon Smith's camera is up and running again.

Love a great winterscape!

By CC gal on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 09:17 am:

Could this road be so named for the commercial fisherman that lived along it at one time ? Just a thought.

By Susan from Kansas on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 09:23 am:

Lovely picture!

By Sarah, Central WI on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 09:40 am:

A definite WOW! That'll be my hubby & I in about an hour...nothing like going ice fishing on a beautiful snowy winter day! Gotta love it!

By Liz, Idaho on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 10:10 am:

The Western half "Storm of the Century" is supposedly in process. Our California contributors and my Northern Nevada families are
getting nailed by Mother nature. Here in Idaho,
we have 50 mph gusts and sloppy snow....have to chase down the plastic garbage bin on wheels...it went for a ride...will bungy it to the shed. Then, dig out the scoop just in case.
Enjoy your day!

By Chris on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 11:26 am:

Love that picture. I havent been in the UP in the winter yet, maybe I should give it a try. Im in the process of buying a ten acre slice of heaven up there, its been a long time dream of mine.

Fishermans Rd. runs west to the lake from Calumet Waterworks
Rd. about a half mile north of 203 going to McLain Park.

By dan, Laurium on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 12:04 pm:

Fisherman's Road intersects Lake Shore Drive very near the mouth of Muggun's Creek. Muggun's used to be a very popular sport fishing spot in the past. I
believe it's all private property now.

Yes, Southern CA is wet. The 8" of rain we've had in the last two weeks is more than we've had in two of the last five YEARS. We're currently at 5 times our normal season total (season is July to July).

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 12:28 pm:

I love it. It reminds me of my Godparents farm. They were from either Norway or Sweeden and they raised dairy cows. What a peaceful memory.

By rsmi on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 12:33 pm:

the guy in the ice fishing tent is Al from 41 lumber. Nice picture Al.

By David S. - CA. on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 12:50 pm:

I remember my grandmother telling me about 30 years ago that she used to go to a school in the woods on Fishermans Rd. when she was a child. It's certainly not there anymore but I've often wondered if there's a foundation or anything left of it now. I would love to explore the spot.

Absolutely beautiful.

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 02:24 pm:

Oh, My! I took one quick look at this picture and IMMEDIATELY made it my wallpaper. What a shot. I would do anything short of anything to be there right now! What a beautiful scene!

By Paul, MI on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 02:29 pm:

Beautiful! The clouds looming over Lake Superior, the trees shadows stretching across undisturbed snow, and the quaint old homestead buildings nestled on the edge of the woods. Beautiful!

By trish, wa on Saturday, January 8, 2005 - 07:04 pm:

What a beautiful, peaceful winter scene. Reminds me of my
grandparents'native Sweden, only w/out the little red
houses. Now we know why our ancestors settled there; it
reminded them of home. To my brother Mike,if you're
reading this, aren't you heading up to Houghton this week?
Drive carefully, and think of pasty-less me when you bite
into one!

By Alice, Ventura, CA on Sunday, January 9, 2005 - 05:03 pm:

Alex, I set it as wallpaper too. And it is even better on screen, full-size. Sometimes the pictures don't look quite as nice, but this one is spectacular!

A bit wet here. I work outside on the weekends. I have missed 5 of the last 6 Saturdays/Sundays. That is not counting the "weather" we have had during the week.

The river behind my daughter's house which according to Michigan standards is a pretty poor excuse for a river normally, is high, and rushing dark, muddy water toward the ocean. Hope it doesn't rise much more. We had flood warnings last night in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

By CHERYL REMALI on Monday, January 10, 2005 - 09:40 pm:

THE PICTURE OF THE OLD FARMHOUSE IS NOW MY HUSBAND'S HUNTING CAMP (CALLED CAMP NORTH). IT IS ABOUT A 1/4 MILE PAST MY HOUSE ON FISHERMANS RD. THE HOUSE IS THE HOOKANA'S OLD FAMILY HOME. ROBERT HOOKANA (MY HUSBAND'S COUSIN), OWNS THE FARM WITH HIS FATHER GEORGE. AT ONE TIME MY HUSBAND'S FAMILY WERE COMMERCIAL FISHERMAN (THE REMALI'S). I'M NOT QUITE SURE HOW IT GOT THE NAME, BUT MCGUNN'S CREEK IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ROAD & AT ONE TIME IT WAS A VERY HEAVILY FISHED CREEK, ESPECIALLY IN THE SPRING AT THE MOUTH OF MCGUNN'S.
I HAVE LIVED ON THIS RAOD FOR OVER 22 YEARS & WOULD NEVER WANT TO MOVE BACK TO TOWN. I HAVE WOLDLIFE OF ALL SORTS I SEE DAILY. I TOTALLY LOVE IT.
DAVE THAT IS A VERY BEAUTIFUL PICTURE, THANK YOU!

By Michael (Thomasbus8516) on Monday, January 16, 2006 - 01:23 pm:

Thank you very much for posting that picture! My grandmother lives on Lakeview, probably about a mile from Fisherman's Road. I've been up there many many times, but have only travelled down Fisherman's once, however it was very pretty! I hope to go to college up there this next fall, and I look forward to moving to the area!

Thanks so much for the picture, and God bless you and yours.
