Having a couple days off for the New Year weekend, I had a bit more time to spend perusing the Guest Gallery albums, which are nearing 300 now. It's a great place to discover the talent and beauty that resides here in the Upper Peninsula. Taana Kalliainen is one of those with that flair to find eye-opening goodness in the simple scenes around this neck of the woods, or lakes, as is the case in this wintery photo! With the New Year still fresh, I think it would be a good time for all of us to make a resolution to get out there and enjoy our surroundings, no matter the weather or location you happen to be in!

#1?

Not quite, Roudy. You will notice these days that the 'What'sUP' page is where you can seek the prestige and fame which accompany the early bird prize:o)

Today the award went to your boss

Oh to be sitting looking at this beautiful scene, instead of back to work.
Happy New Year to everyone

Nice picture--I like the black and white effect.

By maijaMi on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 07:15 am:

Beautiful! Where is it?

By smf in troll land on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 07:51 am:

Great picture!

There's my sister....again. :) "Dead Boat Island." If you look closely you can see three fishing boats explored many times by all the Entry kids...

By John S., Laurium on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 08:06 am:

Hey, Tracie - Happy New Year - Hope everything's going good at 34000 Plymouth Rd.
Is that the pier and lighthouse behind the left side of Dead Boat Island?
Beautiful photo!!

By Taana on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 08:23 am:

Thanks everybody! This island was connected to Jacobsville before the canal was dredged. There is another island just off to the left and you can walk between them. As kids we use to swim around this island and climb on the boats looking for the occasional piece of pottery which we did find. We never did venture inside because there were rumors of poison ivy. There is an old foundation in there from an old store that you could see though.

Check out Tracey Barrett's gallery page showcasing pictures of the L'anse/Baraga area. A little ways beyond hers are some good pictures from Jim Adamson of the Big Erik's to Big Bay area.

Beautiful picture! Glad to be able to have this little piece of Heaven to look at while I'm at work. Hope everyone has a wonderful New Year!

By Tracie on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 09:35 am:

Morning John! That is the South Entry Light behind and to the left. All sorts of new faces here at 34000...

Those out of the way places where you suddenly come
upon forgotten signs of human habitation always evoke
ghostly feelings. One of my favorite reasons to visit
Keweenaw. Thanks for the picture....

Good morning from a very chilly northwest.

Tracie~the Blazer is now sitting on the highway with a sign in the window. How was your New Years?

By Mel, Kansas on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 11:32 am:

Icy conditions down here this morning, but not a snowflake to be seen. There's something very wrong about having 60-70 degree temps over New Year's, and rain (freezing or not) in January.

Missing da UP a *lot*.

By Audrey, San Jose, CA on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 12:15 pm:

I love today's picture!!

Tracie, are you the Tracie from the Visitor's Center??

By Tracie on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 01:10 pm:

Audrey ~

Nope...must be someone else... :)

By Liz, Idaho on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 01:26 pm:

Mary,
I, too, enjoy a quiet afternoon looking at all the Guest Galleries. Such wonderful artists connected to Pasty.com. Thanks for providing them a show case because I am camera challenged (among other things)!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 02:43 pm:

Audrey: I mentioned Tracey from the Visitors' Center above. She has a gallery page now. Check it out! It's first or close to first.

Oh I have missed you people... Then to look at today's picture, it made me really see what I've missed. I have to go through the past few weeks that I missed!

By Hiya on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 07:42 pm:

Been on tour Alex?

By Your Mama,Ga on Monday, January 3, 2005 - 11:53 pm:

Re: Island @Portage Entry- many boats have run aground in trying to venture between the two little islands in front of Toivo Mikkola's dock. (Water depth only a matter of inches.) Back in the '60's the Entry kids and friends (me, included) would do alot of water skiing in the area. I was so happy to see your picture today.

By kjha, Michigan on Thursday, February 24, 2005 - 09:36 am:

The picture makes me feel homesick. I miss the place where my cousins live, where people look like me, where I don't have to explain my thoughts with other people.

This is truly God's country.
