Capturing just the right picture can be tricky, with shutter speeds, exposure and innumerable other settings to worry about, but there's also a bit of luck involved at times too. Such was the case when Dan Brown snapped this Lake Superior shot. At first glance you think, "What a neat shot with the snowy rocks in the foreground and the Lee A. Tregurtha in the distance". Then you take a closer look under the rocks and you spy a surprise Dan was able to get in the frame when he stopped to photograph the freighter. Talk about being in the right place, at the right time. Is this a weasel or an ermine? I've been trying to get in touch with Toivo to find out, since I figured he'd know, but he won't be back from the hunting camp until tomorrow.

Wow, and I thought it was just a nice photo of a big snowy rock with a lake freighter in the background! Awesome!

By Becca (Bec) on Friday, December 2, 2005 - 07:41 am:

Ermine, short-tailed weasel, same thing. Great photo.

By Bob Turnbull (Termoil) on Friday, December 2, 2005 - 08:29 am:

And I noticed the animal, but not the ship!

By Dave R. (Shutterbug) on Friday, December 2, 2005 - 08:30 am:

I agree, it is an ermine (and also my favorite laker in the background!)Thanks Dan for a great shot!

What a great shot. One in a million! How late into the season will these freighters sail?

By Lori Houle-Vial (Runnerlori) on Friday, December 2, 2005 - 08:42 am:

Wow... How awesome, that is a once in a lifetime shot! A freighter and a critter, in frame at the same time... too cool! Or should I say TOO FRIGID! heeheehee

Wow, what beautiful pics, that definately make you homesick. I didn't know that freighters were out this late in the year.

The misty ship in the background is cool too!

My husband says that in the winter they are called an ermine & in the summer they're called weasels. In the summer their color is brown & in the winter they turn white with a black tip on their tail. In the other picture the Lee Tregurtha looks so safe & peaceful but I wish those boats would tie up for the season already. It's no time of year to be out there.

Good morning, Great Pics as usual. The shipping season will close on 1/15 when the Soo Locks close & reopen again on 3/25 when the locks reopen.

What are the chances of getting two neat images in one shot?! It is truly an awesome picture! Little bit of snow here in the middle l.p. Not enough the do much but make everything messy! Happy Friday to everyone!

By robert (Robze) on Friday, December 2, 2005 - 01:51 pm:

Does anyone know if and how you can ride one of those freighters from port to port in the Great Lakes as a passenger only, not as a crewmember.
Any info would be really appreciated.

Hello from a cold Mishawaka IN. Great picture today. That poor little critter looks cold. At least I'm in a warm house. He looks so little out there in the snow. Stay warm everyone.
