By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Monday, November 28, 2005 - 08:08 am:

Back safely from a wonderful weekend in the
UP. We managed to make a big dinner for the
crew on Friday even without running water.
Kind of cold at night --one wood stove can only
do so much.

What a ride up on Thursday. White outs and
blizzard conditions for twelve of the fourteen
hours we were on the road. When we arrived
at the Brownstone Inn to meet up with family
for their Thanksgiving buffet, we found a
closed sign on the door, so we got back in the
car and called the others joining us from
Ishpeming to turn back. We ate off of paper
plates at our daughter's place in Ishpeming
--thanks to the kindness of her boyfriend's
mom who made up plates for us from their
table. The big lake was really roaring as we
drove the last leg from Au Train to Marquette.

Great tale of your trip, Kosk. I had one like that one Christmas where we did make it to Calumet. Kids were young, and I am so happy that they had the opportunity to experience that kind of weather. Awesome!

Down here, we get a snow shower, they call it a whiteout!

Kosk, Sounds like you had a memorable Thanksgiving, eh. Glad to hear that you made it safe and sound. Heard the weather in Marquette was pretty bad this weekend.
Has anyone heard from Ms Katie? She was supposed to be leaving for Texas. Hope she didn't run into that snow storm that is coming out of the west.

Maija, they are a bunch of sissies around here too, when it comes to snow. Everyone goes into panic mode, at the mention of a few inches of snow.
The only noteworthy snowstorm we have had here, was back in 2000...when hubby got his semi and tractor trailer stuck in snow, on the corner to our street...and it took the city crew two days to get him unburied.
Everyone remembers that snowstorm as "sure you remember that snowstorm back in 2000...dontcha remember, it was when Jim down the street got his rig stuck and blocked all traffic in and out of the subdivision.." followed by roars of laughter.

I remember the Ottawa Lodge, just west of Kenton! Brings back some great memories from when I was a youngster! The dances, the wedding receptions and just hanging out playing pool or watching a baseball game at the diamond across the street! Would love to find some old pictures interior and exterior of the lodge. What a shame it had to burn, at least I have my memories. If anyone has a link or knows of where I could see some pictures, please let me know! Thanks!!

The Brownstone Inn has the best cole slaw that I ever had. They use vinegar and sugar combination and let it marinade for awhile. Yum! Yum!... I never can get enough of it while in the area.
