I know I'm butting into an earlier conversation (yesterday now) ... but I wanted to give Kate and Sur5er my thoughts about cookies from the Jampot.
Hope you don't mind.

I don't know about the Hermit cookies from the Jampot (although my husband never passes up an opportunity to get some) ... they're too much for me. However, (and I really am questioning whether this is the smartest thing I've ever done ... afterall, letting out this secret will nearly guarantee that my favorite Jampot delicacy will be in short supply next time we visit...) the BEST ITEM THE JAMPOT SELLS IS THEIR GINGERSNAP COOKIES!!! They are just like the ones Great-Aunt Dora used to bake for us (only bigger)! Crisp on the outside ... soft in the center ... they are so, so yummy that I buy bags and bags everytime we stop in (which is at least once or twice a year). And they are ssssoooo good even frozen (explains the bags, eh?) Now, I know the Jampot closes real soon (if it isn't already closed) so I'm counting on the cold, freezing winter months to affect your memory and you will forget that I ever mentioned that the JAMPOT HAS THE BEST GINGERSNAP COOKIES IN THE WORLD!!!

CindyMay,
The Jampot closed for the season, on October 15th...and the last date to order their cookies was October 10th. Sigh.

From The Detroit News

Flags to be lowered in honor of Ontonagon soldier

Associated Press

LANSING -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm has ordered that U.S. flags across the state be lowered Monday to honor a Michigan soldier killed in Iraq.

Marine Cpl. Nicholas O. Cherava, 21, of Ontonagon was killed by an improvised explosive device on Oct. 6 while conducting operations against enemy forces in Al Karmah. He was assigned to the Second Battalion, Second Marine Regiment, Second Marine Division, Second Marine Expeditionary Force, in Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Cherava was the 61th member of the U.S. armed forces with known Michigan ties to be killed in Iraq.

Footnote to Lahelo's post: This brave young man was Z-Man's nephew...our sympathy to him and his family.
CORRECTION: Sorry about the mix-up, Nicholas was Z-Man's cousin, not his nephew.

Mornin', regrets over a lost one. Cherava was one of the brave.

I used to always get the hermit cookies. Now I get those for my daughter and sugar cookies for me. My husband likes the peanut butter & jelly bars (real healthy for a diabetic!). And I have to have the pear-cinnamon jelly! I think of the hermit cookies as a breakfast cookie, they're a meal in themselves, very dense.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Monday, October 17, 2005 - 10:23 am:

So sorry to learn of CPl.Nick's death. We are fortunate to have these brave young people willing to fight for their country.I am thankful.

My Mom used to make great Hermit cookies, they were so good. Sometime I may try to find her recipe and make some. When I was real young we used to visit this relative of my Mom's(in Hancock) and she would always give us these good gingersnap cookies. That is all I remember of the visits.
Have a great day everyone!

Back at work-darn! Had a near perfect trip to the UP last week. Colors were great, from the top of Mt. Bohemia to Lake of The Clouds and all places in between. Had seven saunas in a row! See you next year.

Z-Man and Helen, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your nephew Nicholas. I can't begin to imagine your pain, over such a tragic loss. He was definately one of our brave, who fought for everyday freedoms...and who will be missed greatly by his family and those whose lives he touched.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, October 17, 2005 - 02:07 pm:

Lahelo, Thanks for taking the time to post the article on Marine Cpl. Nicholas Cherava. I read it to hubby this morning, and he went outside and put up our flag in honor of Nicholas.

My heart goes out to the Cherava family for their loss. I know what they are going through.

Thanks Dale and RCW for the pictures. First snow always gave us a smile....but we were happy to see it go in the spring. I would like to say hi to you both. It has been a while.

I would also like to say hi to BJ in Milford. I was at the GM proving grounds again yesterday and probably drove right past her house.

To Z-Man and his whole family, as I know the pain of the loss of your young man myself, my prayers and thoughts are with you. I weep along with you. Faith and loving friends and family will see you through your pain. God bless you all. A brave young citizen to be sure.
