First Post

The falls are beautiful!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 08:12 am:

Good morning everyone ;-) Noticed a couple of bright orange leaves on our maple tree yesterday...so fall is in the air...even though the temps are supposed to be in the 80's throughout the week.
John Dee had an interesting journal entry this week, about the possibility of heavy snow fall being somewhat related to extremely hot summers. I am hoping he is right. Cuz we all know, that Sur5er loves the snow :-)

Heard a story on the news down here last night that a young woman fell over a cliff at Canyon Falls and died. Probably over the weekend. So sad.

By Cindy Lee Maki (Cindylee) on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 08:47 am:

Hey Sur5er, I don't want to much snow this winter, shoveling that white stuff can get pretty sickening. I'll be happy with no more than 300 inches. My son can't wait for winter to fire up that old snow-cat!!!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 08:51 am:

Cindylee,
This is how I shovel my driveway. 1) Start up truck; 2) Put truck in 4 WD; 3) Drive truck out of garage, and down the length of driveway; 4) Put truck in reverse, and drive back up driveway. Repeat this process until snow in driveway is planked. :)

Message for Charlie or Mary, not for publication:
Is it possible for me to use either Cam Notes or What's UP to
seek info on UP WWII fatalities for the database I'm creating? I
used it once for this purpose but don't know if the rules have
changed. I'm trying to find details on the life and death of a
flight nurse, Lt. Christine Gasvoda of Calumet who died in a
plane crash in Europe on 4-13-1945.

My Uncle Leonard used to say regarding the removal of snow,"the Lord put it there, the Lord can take it away". And when anyone went to his house, they walked over huge snowbanks that had their own paths on them from him coming & going. Needless to say he was something else but we all loved him. I prefer my husband to plow our driveway & shovel a little bit.

Hi Sur5er, I SHOULD OF been alittle my accurate on my wording about shoveling. I only have to shovel my front step. ONE step. I have a plow blazer!!! I'm sure as heck will not shovel my driveway,it's way to long. I would have to start the first snow and if I'm lucky I might be done in May of 2006. haha!!!!!! have a good one

Cindylee,
I have been trying to talk hubby into getting me a plow for my truck...but he says I am dangerous enough in traffic without one. One of my friends has a pully system in their garage for their snow plow, so they can put it on and remove it from their truck easily. You can tell they are not from da UP, where you put the plow on at the end of August and have to keep it on until the end of May.

By Kelly Marshall (Kelly) on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 12:15 pm:

Sur5er: Here in the UP we say "panked" not planked...but it is still a funny thought

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 01:02 pm:

Down here I have had some strange looks when I mention "panking "snow or anything else:) We would do that on our path and you were in big trouble if your foot slipped off!! Luckily the path just went to the drive way.

Hey everyone, I got a call from someone special to me this a.m. Her daughter(Cassie) is expecting her second child and they had to hospitalize her last night as she went into labor. She is only 7 mo along and is very frightened about possibly losing her baby(girl)She asked me to ask as many people as I can to pray for her. They managed to stop the labor last night but the situation is stil pretty serious. My thanks to all who care to remember her(hubby too) and her baby in your prayers.Fran

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 01:44 pm:

Kelly,

Ooops...typo error. :) But come to think of it, in southern Michigan, they actually 'planked' the dirt roads during the spring snow thaws...laying peices of wood on the muddy road, for cars to drive over. That is how 'Plank Road' in Monroe County Michigan, got its name.

I am still having plow envy over Cindylee's snow plow though. ;)

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 01:48 pm:

Fran,
Your friend's daughter, grand daughter, and family will definately be in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 02:27 pm:

sur5er: That sounds similar to a "corduroy road" laid with logs.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 02:57 pm:

Marsha,
I love the history of Michigan. Here's info on both the plank roads and the corduroy roads in Michigan.

By Cindy Lee Maki (Cindylee) on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 10:56 pm:

Fran, Cassie Hubby and baby to be are in my prayers. Sur5er, I can barely drive in a staight line, But the plow blazer is a differant story. Let's just put it this way. A few more dents and backing up into the trees is no big deal to me no more. Did that and Will do it again this winter. I know, I can't back up!!!!!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 - 11:44 pm:

The leaves are changing here, too. The birch and box elder leaves are falling. Even the tamarack trees are getting gold colored already. Seems too soon, doesn't it? Spose I have to think about putting the snowblower on the Cub Cadet. Don't want to rush things, though.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 - 12:16 am:

Cindylee,
You are hilarious. Well I guess you have even out the dents on the rear of your truck, eh.
It's hard driving a straight line, with a plow attached...because you can't line up the middle of the hood of your truck, with the lines on the road.
A good indication that you are not driving straight...and are over the middle line a wee bit, is if you see oncoming traffic driving on their shoulder. :-) Oopsey.

By Cindy M. Archibald (Cindymay) on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 - 12:19 am:

Gee, I want to thank all of you that have explained to this life long lower penisula girl WHAT THE HECK MY HUSBAND HAS BEEN DOING WITH THE SNOW FOR YEARS!!! Here I thought he was just too d@#$ lazy to shovel!!!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 - 12:24 am:

Cindymay,
Why shovel...when you are just going to get more snow? Besides, if you pank it, it provides a nice cushion, for when you fall ;)

By Cindy Lee Maki (Cindylee) on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 - 12:43 am:

Hey Sur5er, the plow blazer is used only for plowing my yard. It never leaves the yard. Thank god, because I'd be crashing everything in sight! With the size of my rig plus add a plow, I'm only5-4 and I have to sit on 2 pillows to see over the steering wheel. But don't worry, I have a small car and drivng that feels like my bum is riding on the road. Also I am a good driver, no traffic accidents or speeding tickets. Knock on wood!!!

By Brock Waugh (Brock) on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 - 02:33 am:

Is anyone ever on this late?

By John (Johnmich) on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 - 02:53 am:

nope

By Danbury (Danbury) on Wednesday, September 21, 2005 - 03:24 am:

Depends on how you look at it, Brock. It's 0922 in the morning.

CindyLee's remark reminds me of a girl, ok, now she's a woman, I knew in NH. Driving her father's '79 SuperCab, she got pulled over once because she's so small, the cop thought the truck was going without a driver at all!
