Only one more day of this heat and humidity! Hope we don't have to do it again next week. Have a great day!

Good morning :)
Mary, So glad to hear that everything went well with your surgery. Now kick those heels up...follow the doctor's orders...and get plenty of rest during the next few days. No cheating allowed :)

By Cindy, St. Clair Shores, MI (Cindy) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 09:13 am:

Mary, I'm also glad that everything went well for you. You sure have had many people sending positive thoughts your way. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

By lz (Llamamama) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 10:02 am:

Good to hear from Mary!
Yooper, thanks for the fan, we in SW Michigan will need it today! Blueberries are cooking on the bushes!
Love all the pics today.
Sur5er, I'm thinking it's Dacquiries after work today!

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 10:35 am:

Good morning from a hot, humid Mishawaka, IN. It will be in the 90's again today.
Mary, glad to hear your surgery went well. Take it easy as the doctor ordered.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 10:43 am:

Yeah, Mary. Way to go. If I were Yooper with all those cool pics, I'd give you a thumbs up. Great shot of Northern Lights. Only time we got to see them was when I was working nights in the ER at Dowagiac's hospital. Never get them here.

Sharon Smith:
I read your Aug.2nd journal and you mentioned not seeing lightening bugs. Believe it or not, we have a ton of them in Ferndale. For the last 3 years we've been seeing them. Kinda neat looking out in the backyard and seeing them blinking. I hope more will start to sprout.

By Julie Webster (Julwisc) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 01:21 pm:

If you click go to Sharon's website and click on "Mission," you can find her e-mail address to e-mail her directy instead of sending her messages through the Pasty Cam. Just a thought.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 01:58 pm:

Sdcferndale,
When I read Sharon's journal for the 2nd, it dawned on me, that for the first summer in a long time, I haven't seen lightening bugs at all this summer. Usually in the evening, the doggies love to chase them around the backyard...and come to think of it, they haven't had any lightening bugs to chase.
Llamamama, (I love the sound of your screen name by the way), yep today's hot weather definately are conditions for daiquiris tonight. Cheers! :)

By dlp (Babyseal) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 02:35 pm:

Anyone care to share their daiquiri recipe with me?? Heat index here is 100 degrees, and I love it! If I can't make a daiquiri to cool off, I will just try an remember what January feels like in the U.P.
Yup, that does it, I feel cooler now. :)

Good afternoon from Suomi!

Babyseal,
My Windows program is locking me out of my Word Documents, and thus I can't get to my strawberry daiquiri recipe that we were emailing around.
Simple version: Puree' lots of fresh or frozen strawberries...adding about a cup of sugar per quart. Add a little daiquiri mix to thin it out a bit and add Captain Morgan Spiced Rum (if you want). Throw it in a plastic container and freeze for a few hours. *In the paint department at Lowe's they have great plastic paint containers with lids and handles which are perfect for the daiquiri mix, for about a dollar.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 04:28 pm:

SDC; When I lived in Ferndale we used to bring lightening bugs back with us from the cabin in Caro and relased them on Camden St.You should see it here at dark, million's of them.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 04:58 pm:

David: You sound like the sort of person who saves snowballs for summer in the freezer! I just commented to my husband the other day about the huge lightening bug population here in Genesee County.

By Happy to be in da UP (Lahelo) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 06:29 pm:

To JARMO ITÄNIEMI, That was one sure heck of a steer over there in Finland! It is a pretty neat picture for sure, never seen one like it! We don't grow them here like that.

By PATT HANSEN (Truetroll) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 06:56 pm:

SDC in Ferndale you took the words out of my mouth. I grew up in "fashionable Ferndale" in the 50's/60's and we always had a ton of lightning bugs over on Edgeworth. But then I lived more north than Sharon (LOL) as I was 1 block south of 10 Mile. If memory serves me right Sharon's street Camden was even further south.

Yes, I saw that steer at that link earlier today too, but check Jarmo's link again, now it leads to many more (250) much more interesting "critter pictures", more interesting that that ol' steer anyway! (How'd that happen?)

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 08:30 pm:

I noticed this year how sparse the lightning bugs have been, never so few in forty years here in NW Ill.

By Hank (Hank) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 09:17 pm:

Is there anybody out there who can give a report on the fishing on Portage lake.

By AJ - WI (Ajinwi) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 09:29 pm:

Mary: Still thinking of you and wishing you a speedy recovery. Take Care!

By AJ - WI (Ajinwi) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 09:34 pm:

I meant to comment: Lightning bugs? We always called them "fireflies." They must be the same fly?

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 10:34 pm:

I would think you can call 'em lightning bugs, fire flies, or glow worms. Although they don't seem to be worms, 'eh? Have seen only a few of
'em UP here in Cornell. Everybody gettin' ready for the big FINNGRANDFEST 2005? Been a long time coming. TGIF = Thank God I'm Finnish!

By Greta Armata (Gretania) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 - 11:35 pm:

All the fireflies must be here in the Milwaukee area. There have been a bumper crop of them over the past few summers. This year, they seem awfully huge and appear to float in the humid evening air. My cats love to sit in the windows and watch them.

By Happy to be in da UP (Lahelo) on Thursday, August 4, 2005 - 07:27 am:

We have had the fireflies here also. (As I believe they have them all over the U.S.) They are so neat to look at, just lighting up their little tails. It is just so interesting. They seem to light up the whole world when they do their thing!! It's really neat.

By Sdcferndale (Sdcferndale) on Thursday, August 4, 2005 - 11:49 am:

Dave Hiltunen / Patt Hansen:
We've lived in "Fashionable Ferndale" for 27 years and we use to have lighting bugs then for many years they disappeared, now they're back again which I'm glad. When we're able to sit on the front porch (and not in this 90 degree weather), its neat to watch them.

If you haven't been to Ferndale in a while, you'd be surprised to see all the new improvements done. Lots of houses, condos, lofts being built and new businesses cropping up.
