If you take US-41 north through Hancock, you'll be headed up Quincy Hill. There are a number of side roads leading off the main thoroughfare along the way. Now, I'm not certain which road takes you to lower Pewabic, but Tanya Voldarski has captured a peaceful shot of the country dirt trail that leads you there and beyond. Sure seems like a great place to take a walk with your favorite canine, so he can sniff and investigate to his heart's content. In Tanya's second shot, the view includes a couple of the old smoke stacks, left over from the days of mining in the region. Landmarks that many folks use as guides while taking walks, drives and I'm betting a few pilots have used them to get their bearings too.

top picture look like "progress" with the tall skinny tower. what is happening to the UP?

We were on this road a couple of years ago,and found a old barn selling antiques/yard sale stuff. Dont know if they are set up there often or maybe we were just lucky.

Wish I was traveling down the road in the first pic. Hang on, if I listen close enough, I can hear my truck ratteling as I head down this road. Ok, that is the number one thing I miss around here...dirt roads...they have black-topped all the roads in Indiana :(

Sur5er..you wouldn't think dirt(gravel) roads are so neat if you had the dust flying into your house all the time. I'd been admonished years ago that they are "gravel", not "dirt" around here. :)

there are many cell towers, state police towers going up all over the UP. Many State Police towers have spoiled very scenic views in my opinion.

Nobody has dirt roads like the UP. There is so much neat stuff to discover whether in a truck or walking. I agree with Sur5er, miss those dirt roads.

Somtimes the best things in life can be found far from any paved city road all you got to do is get a little mud on the tires.

But think of all the good that comes from the State Police towers. With better communication, the state police and other law enforcement agencies can better respond to emergencies and save lives.
Also, when an officer is on duty, the only communication they have is via their squad car radios...and it is not the time to be worried about bad reception.
Instead of seeing the towers as an eyesore, I view them as knowing that the state of Michigan is doing it's best to protect the citizens and it's officers.
When I travel Route 28 at night, I sorta like the idea of the state police tower lights, guiding my way. ;)

Just two weeks ago my husband and I were exploring the "dirt" roads in the area of Paridise and Grand Marias. What fun we had on those adventures. One took up to Nawakwa Lake that I knew about from their website on John Dee's. It was neat to actually be at the lake. No one else was around at the access. We sat on the pier and ate our lunch. Enjoying the beauty and quite.

My Great Grandparents were Married Upstairs Pewabic's Charcutery Meat Store in 1902. Can Anyone on here recall anything about a Pewabic's Meat Store or know where it was located. Ive never known. I gather Pewabic was somewhere near Quincy.My greatgrandfather did work at Quincy. My grandmother always took us to a place that had falling apart miners houses somewhere on the hill and told us they called it •••• town and that thats where she was born.
Anyone know where The town of Pewabic was or is or know where I could find a photo.

Only slightly odd that "Lower Pewabic" is "above" -- i.e. north of -- "Pewabic"!

Pewabic Pottery started at a studio on Alfred St in Detroit in the early 20's I believe by a lady named Chase who is buried in Birmingham. The Pottery still attracts artists from everywhere. I wonder what the connection might be to the town. Or maybe there is none...........

I think more fisherman than pilots used to old stacks as reference. I'll bet the one at Gay has been used zillions of times by folks on the water.......

this map is marked incorrectly, lower pewabic is between the Quincy and Pewabic label on this map.
where it says lower pewabic, that should be Menard location. where it says pewabic, that is known as Coburntown, it was known as Helltown many years ago. My wife grew up in Lower Pewabic.

I thought I knew where Pewabic was, and as you might have guessed from my previous note, I was a bit suspicious about the "Lewer Pewabic" on the map.

If what appears on the map as "Pewabic" was more accurately Coburntown, then where was "Pewabic"?
Perhaps a little tighter view will help:



Note the "Lower Pewabic St" heading southeast of US41, "below" Pewabic.

I have always known the area as upper and lower Pewabic with the highway (US41) as the divider.
Upper being on the left of the map and lower being on the right. So I guess Pewabic is both Upper and Lower. On the close up you can see Lower Pewabic street. Upper Pewabic is where it says 2nd ,3rd 4th st etc..
CRF-16 would be Lake Annie Rd.

When I was a kid, we would walk from Paavola to the Menard loc. to catch the city bus to Lauruim or Calumet. Had a friend who showed me some chords on the banjo, he lived behind the Quincy #2 shafthouse. Think it was where the map says, 'Franklin Tram Ext.' Long time ago, 'eh? Am I gettin' THAT old?

Mary Chase Perry Stratton was born in Hancock, MI and there is a house/museum 501 (c) (3) non-profit there today.... Founder of Pewabic Pottery in Detroit in 1907.....Well I was about half right......I sure love Google.........I have a new place to visit next trip north........

If you come down the road where it says Franklin Tram Ext. it looks like it dead ends. If you go straight, you come to the top of Mont Ripley ski hill. There are some pretty awesome views.

As for the market you mention--- If it's the one I remember quite well when we lived in Pewabic in 1948 2 houses from the now famous Quincy Mine, it was on the west side of 41 just between the road from the Quincy mine to the highway and the old Franklin Mine Shaft! It was old & quaint way back then, something like a general store from an old western movie! I remember the old ornate huge brass & gold primitive cash register, wooden floors and wooden barrels of good things sold bulk! As I recall it was painted dark green!

Good Luck my Good Friend Russ ( a.k.a. ) as the Bird man,because of his great knowledge of them.My Uncle Alvin married a gal Hilma from Coburntown,a.k.a. •••• town.Also another Uncle married a gal Eva, with the same last name as mine,that is no relation.Her mother lived on the highway right next to this store Russ. I am 54 and i can remember going into this store as you discribed it.The dirt road looks like to me the one we used to get there from Dollar Bay,either up to the Airport,then a left on this road,or up Goat Hill from Ripley.Russ,i can ask my brother or cousin in $ Bay to board your dogs while your there,as far as your other farm animals,hope you can find someone.

actually completed in 30 days. YAY. I am so excited to
be able to have some in my house.

I was not aware of the UP/Pewabic connection.

The dirt road pictured is the road off of Sunshine rd to Lower Pewabic.

Russ and everyone thanks for the Pewabic info and photo's and stories. The map gave me better Idea and the stories about living near the mine of where Grandma had taken us. The houses were in rows and looked all alike. She told us something about the numbers on the corners of the houses too that I can not remember.
I felt like I was walking those wood floors and looking at the cash register when I read your post about the store.
Russ hope you make it up north. When my father passed away and we took him home to Hancock I had not been there in 20 years ,but I remembered every turn in the road like I had lived there all my life.He loved it up there and showed us many Places he knew growing up when we went on summer vacations, Now I havent been back in 10 years and I know how you feel trying to find someone to take care of things and be able to go.Summers not over yet Im still keeping my fingers crossed
