Good morning all.

By sblazek Oconomowoc, WI on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 06:55 am:

Good morning everyone!

Will be in the UP last week of July. I'll probably be the
only one with a walker but what the heck, after 5 hip
surgeries since October I'm just happy to be alive.Say
Hi if you see me.

Good Morning!

By sur5er on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 11:33 am:

Good morning :) Seems like the storm that was coming up from the south has completely side stepped us...again...sigh...because of Lake Michigan. Poor farmers. Skies are clear, and the heat and humidity are on the rise.
Szblasek, Congrats on being a medical miracle. I think that's awesome that there is nothing that will hold you back. Perhaps it was your trip to the UP that kept you going? :)

Just a comment that Sharon doesn't have her feeders up. Very unusual.

By anon on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 12:38 pm:

Sharon's feeders are up now! Looks like everything is A-OK.

Thank You everyone who held up my husband during his lost job situation. He will be going to a school district just south of us in Canyon, TX. Thanks again!!!!

sur5er,
Funny, I thought of you when I wrote my message. Yes,
there isn't a day goes by when I don't think of Copper
Harbor and the rest of the UP. Sharon's site really kept
me thinking as well. When I got feeling really down my
husband would remind me about being up there and
being well enough to go. So now I'm on my way. Hope
those who want to get up there do so soon.

By Ms. Katie, Il. on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 02:16 pm:

sblazek... I'll say Hi now as I won't be able to go to UP this year. I have some memories of Oconomowoc, went to St. Jerome's school for a couple months about 1948, fourth grade. Always liked the town. Then my mom passed away at their hospital in '94 when ahe was a resident at the Masonic Home. As a kid I was so proud I could spell the town's name, in a sing-song way oCoNoMoWoC. :) Take good care of yourself.

Margaret, Great to hear that your hubby will be back to work. I had been wondering how things were working out for the two of you. Congrats! Time to celebrate, eh.
Sblazek, Thank you so much for the compliment. I was about six months away from making the UP my home, when I was victimized by the crime...and my plans took a detour. I had been planning for about five years to move to da UP..so that was the hardest part...to have worked so hard for a goal and to be so close to it and then have it taken away.
But I refuse to give up on my dream of moving back home to da UP...and think of our stay in Indiana as just a detour..it's what gets me through the days until I am finally home ;)
I love reading Sharon's journal also. Is she inspirational or what? I have been after her to publish the journal as a book. Sharon definately has a gift of inspiring and motivating people, in addition to a wonderful gift of writing.

sur5er: I have enjoyed your entries. But I'm sure many don't understand why you can't return to Michigan.

Please ignor this if it is to personal, but I'm curious.

Sur5fer-What's the issue with MICHIGAN???

By it's all I know on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 08:50 pm:

Don't know the issue with Sur5er but reading her posts I can tell ya a few things. She lives in Indiana near the MI border. She once lived in Michigan (downstate south of Detroit) and she likes the U.P. Her and hubby want to retire in the U.P.

By Jo Ann, Hancock on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 09:31 pm:

There seems to be trouble with the bridge this evening. It went up for a sailboat but wouldn't come back down. Traffic sat for 15 to 20 minutes at least. They have it on the lower part now and the traffic can go across but a sailboat just called to have the bridge raised and it couldn't. They tried to see if they could sneak under the lower part but had to dock on the west side. I hope they can find out what is wrong before 9 a.m. tomorrow morning when the Ranger is scheduled to leave. It has been interesting listening to the conversations over the scanner.

By sur5er on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 10:50 pm:

Freedom Lover, I love your screen name.
Inquiring minds on Pasty Cam want to know:
I had planned for several years to move to the UP...it was my ultimate dream. About six months before I graduated from college....and was to move up to the UP, I was almost killed...and my plans and life were put on hold. The man who attempted to kill me, was an ex boyfriend...who was also a sheriff deputy. He was arrested on my polygraph results...and tried on felonious assault with a dangerous weapon charges. During the investigation, it was found out that I was not this deputy's only victim...and it was one of the major reasons why I refused to drop the charges....as I wanted no one else to become his victim.
The two year trial process was very public...and in short, public sympathy was with the deputy who attempted to kill me; the sheriff and the sheriff department. After the trial...in which the deputy was allowed to escape justice because of his position, the sheriff immediately reinstated the deputy to the department...at which point the deputy began threatening and harassing me.
The Michigan State Police arrived at my home one day and informed me that the deputy was bragging to other deputies about his ability to get away with his attempt on my life...and his ability to 'do it again'. Although the MSP had notified the sheriff of the apparent threat the deputy posed to me, the sheriff made it clear that he would not protect me. Attempts by the MSP to file new charges against the deputy, failed.
Believing that another state would protect me more than Michigan had, we relocated to Indiana within two weeks of the MSP's visit to my home. Within two months of our move to Indiana, the deputy obtained our address in Indiana...and again the sheriff looked the other way.
All my family and friends are in Michigan...but it will never be safe for me to live in my hometown, to be close to family and friends...yet I want desperately to return to Michigan. Since one of my goals/dreams was to move to the UP, I saw no reason to continue to allow the crime to continue to stop me from accomplishing what I had always wanted to do. So moving to the UP is one goal that I now refuse to give up on...or allow someone to take from me. Besides, I made a pact with Detective White of the Michigan State Police, that I wouldn't give up on my dream of returning home to the Michigan UP...and I can't let a state trooper down ;)

Sur5er; Fight the fight...return home..if that is
what you wish to do. Good luck to you!!!

By sblazek Oconomowoc, WI on Friday, July 15, 2005 - 12:37 am:

Sur5fer.....thank you for sharing your story. I am amazed
that this life can be so complicated and in your case
unfair. I hope you get where you want to be. I know
some people don't want to here about religeous stuff
but it has been my strength during many a "hopeless"
time. I will keep you in my prayers if that is ok.

By Suzy/Mn on Friday, July 15, 2005 - 12:39 am:

Dear Sur5er,

Thank you for pouring out your story after several months of needing to. The U.P. is pretty remote still and it would bring you peace.
I also long to be there and am working on it! NEVER GIVE UP!

By sur5er on Friday, July 15, 2005 - 02:11 am:

Sblazek and Suzy/Mn: Thank you. I thought hubby was surprising me with a move to the UP a few weeks ago...when he arrived home not with his semi, but a moving van. Turned out that his semi was in for repairs...and instead of having to waiting at the repair shop, they gave him a moving van to drive home. Major bummer.
The humor of it was not lost on hubby...who told me a couple of hours later, "You might want to call down to the police station and let them know we are not moving. The squad cars keep driving up and down the street and stopping to look at the moving van...and I heard shouts of glee."
