Whenever I take to the road to explore the northern regions of the Keweenaw, it's always such a pleasure to pass by, or better yet, to stop for a break at this park at the junction of US-41 and Cliff Drive. I've seen the Road Commission crew maintaining its beauty, and they do an outstanding job. I don't think I've ever been by there and not seen its lawns manicured and flowers blooming - except of course in the winter months! Dave Antikainen sure captured the simple charm that greets you as you arrive in the area and bids you farewell as you leave!

Having spent yesterday in Iron Mountain, I missed all the excitement of that SBC cable cut near Boston Pond. Seems that this is the ONLY cable which carries the control signals for 911, cell phones, Internet service, voice mail, call forwarding, alarm systems, and tickets to the Husky games. Our thanks to the hard working linesmen who restored this vital pipe. I'm sure everybody's glad to have life return to normal in the Upper Peninsula's Upper Peninsula.

I'm wishing that I could be passing by that little park right now. Sigh . . . .

LOOKS LIKE A GREAT PLACE FOR A PICNIC!!!!

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 08:13 am:

Great picture today- UP roadside parks are all so pretty....... I've noticed a decrease in the number of postings with the new sign in process and password... its a shame that spam has ruined the ease of posting. Only 7 days and I'm off to Grand Island !!

By Beverly Camp (Upmama) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 08:54 am:

I'm testing my password (shoulda' tried it yesterday along with everyone else). Enjoy the weekend.

By dave sou (Davesou) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 09:31 am:

what spam?

I've been coming here for a long time and haven't seen any.

Editor's note: You don't always see the spam because we usually catch it and delete it as soon as possible. Believe me it's there, the latest two attacks had right around 100 spam posts between them!

anyway, back to the CC ... hopefully the weather is nice in August for my short trip to god's country

I'll be passing by this lovely park in less than a week, so it's time to bite the bullet and register to post. I think many of us resent the registration and this is no reflection at all on Charlie and the great staff at pasty.com. We resent having to do it due to the actions of the idiots who put out the viruses and spam. However when you weigh the registration against the great pleasure this site has brought to myself and others and all the wonderful things I have learned about the UP and her citizens, the user/password is just a blip on the screen. Sorry if I got on the soapbox on this, but I did make reference to the picture in my opening sentence. Charlie and staff, thank you all for everything. Don't know what we would without the site for our daily dose of sanity.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 10:36 am:

Oh ya i remember going to this place having a fun time with Mom & Dad,Aunt's & Uncle's,& my Cousin's.Thanks for the memory!
As to the now having to register; Can you now e-mail & recieve e-mail from those who have posted with out fear of spam or virus? Was wondering if dave sou is the son of the Barber who used to have the place in Hancock?

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 10:39 am:

It really isn't much bother to register on this site. You don't have to put all the info requested if you don't want to!

By maija (Maijami) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 11:44 am:

I'm grateful for the registration. I don't know about other spam, but I got a flurry of msgs about "Mark Hickcox" after I mentioned him in the rememberance page. I just delete them all. Still, it's very difficult to see even the subject lines of these!

By /Hancock (Lulubelle) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 12:04 pm:

The eagles I wrote about on Thursday were seen from a canoe. We were not very close to them. We know they are protected and are very happy to see them return to our area.

Love this park when we drive by it....

Seeven weeks from today my wife and I will be stopping at this beautiful park on our way to Copper Harbor. I think I can wait that long!???!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 12:29 pm:

There is a park out by us, that reminds me so much of this park...right down to the small wooden bridge. Each time I pass it, I can't help but think of home.
Dave, I clicked on the link for "...messages posted in the past 24 hours", late one night, and there had to have been more than a hundred spam posts within a short period of time, posted in the archives, from even a year back.
You don't notice the spam attacks here, unless you go to the archive skeleton, and you see one spam post after another.

By dave sou (Davesou) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 12:33 pm:

"Was wondering if dave sou is the son of the Barber who used to have the place in Hancock? "

actually...no :)
its not my full name...just fill in the last 3 letters of the last part...and you will have it :)
Its a very familiar name in Chassell.
a riddle for Saturday

By joseph hurley (Jhurl) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 12:36 pm:

I just returned from copper country a week ago and pass this spot several times. It's a nice place to rest after driving .

By Priscilla A Martinmaki (Priscilla) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 12:53 pm:

The picture of the bald eagles in their nest is
just fabulous! I am going to copy it and frame it
to put with a USA theme copper picture of our
Liberty Bell. That will be perfect! Today's
picture of the little park is beautiful, also!!

By Skylar Baxter (Skylar) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 01:13 pm:

3 more weeks and we'll be passing by there also. I also have been there on my sled, but no pictures. Later, Skylar.

By Vincent Vega (Theoneandonlykâ) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 02:05 pm:

Hmmm... in appx 10 days we'll be passing this spot. And just around the corner we'll be stopping at the Cliff View then the Vansville for a little "refreshement" on our journey to our vacation destination.

"What County is Stoned?" was a clue on a road rally I participated in when I was at Tech back in about '85.

Look at the pic where the word KEWEENAW is spelled out in white. Those letters used to be spelled with little white stones.

So as you drove by you and saw the letters made with "stones" you knew the answer to "What County is Stoned" was Keweenaw!

Anyone now what happened to the little white stones? I always remembered that clue each time I drove by.

By Lowell La Fave (Lowell) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 04:36 pm:

Neat picture.
Couldn't keep anything looking that neat here in Missouri. The knuckleheads would just tear it up and see how fast they could destroy it.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 06:12 pm:

I think the roadside rest areas are exceptionally lovely in the UP. They are beautifully maintained .Always enjoy the ones on the way to copper Harbor.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 08:50 pm:

Davesou: Yes, I know what the other 3 letters are to the popular name in Chassell. That is why I asked. The letters are in this order...From the 24 letters in the alphabet number's are 13-9-19.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 08:53 pm:

Opp'ssssee there are 26 letters in the alphabet. i guess i got caught up in the old joke L&M got kicked for smoking.

By dave sou (Davesou) on Saturday, July 23, 2005 - 11:28 pm:

actually, the barber was my uncle Jerome...he was in
Houghton .. near where the Burger King is just down from there a little bit...maybe its an insurance office now.

We used to get our haircut and look out the binoculars he had set up there over at Riply. The binocs were my dads that he got in WW2 ..German tank binoculars...I still have them.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, July 24, 2005 - 07:24 am:

Davesou; I looked back an i said Hancock,i meant Houghton. The shop used to be nestled in the rocks.I remember you & can picture you from back when. You were quite the Basketball player. Also i remember the binoculars,so kool that you have them.

Another spot on a list of places I need to stop at next month.
It's been a long time since I've seen this park and I'm glad it's still in such great shape.
