This peaceful photo from our expanding Guest Gallery, was taken by Paul Schultz, who doesn't really say where he spotted these clouds in the sky and the water! I'll surmise, from the other images he's uploaded, that it's somewhere near Copper Harbor. Although, since just returning from five beautiful days at Isle Royale, that was the first locale that crossed my mind, when I spotted the reflective waters and the trees along the shoreline. It truly is representative of just about anywhere here in the U.P., so maybe we'll just let everyone imagine it's their favorite spot!

My guess would be Fanny Hooe, probably standing on the bank at Fort Wilkins.

Ooooooooooh, this looks peaceful. I can even see myself floating on my floaty on this lake. Aaaaaaaah, the smell of the pines. :)

Or it could be Schlatter Lake, taken from the island.

I agree with RD - looks like Fanny Hooe from the campground. Oh, how I would love to be up there right now instead of sitting at my desk . . . REALLY need my UP fix!

What a great visit we had in the UP last week! Pasties, waterfalls, big water, warm weather, no bugs (ok, only a few) ... it doesn't get any better! Thanks for your hospitality!

Missing the UP, Remember how I joked with you awhile back about there not being any trees in NJ? Last month when I went with hubby on his NJ run, I was awake in the wee hours of the morning as we crossed into NJ from PA...just as the sun was rising. I told hubby, "Well I be...there are trees in NJ just as Missing da UP said."
Ok, now I know where you are coming from. NJ is beautiful in the mountains.
Getting floaty inflated...and a book to read. I will only be in my pool...but will be thinking of this lake. :)

Yes, it is Lake Fanny Hooe, taken along the trail between Fort Wilkens and Copper Harbor. My wife and I always hike that loop from Copper Harbor to Fort Wilkens, back out across M-41 by the water and the lighthouse overlook, down to the water treatment plant, and then back to Copper Harbor. There are so many neat spots like this to walk to from the trail and see so many things. And it seems we always see something new!

Pretty soon with all this warm weather and water, the shores will turn green with algae. Also with the extremely warm water in large bodies of water, I think there will be severe weather patterns.

Can someone fill us all in on the legend of Fanny Hooe?

And here I always thought the four seasons were June, July, August and Winter.

Yooping it the 8-13 of August. Can't wait to get back. Don't know who's going to drag me back down, but will have to find someone, or they'll miss me at work.

We always were told that ther were 9 months of winter and 3 months of poor sledding.

I know someone in NH who says the four seasons are winter, mud, bugs, and almost winter.

Because the Copper Country is full of legends of all kinds, there are several Fannie Hooe tales out there... some say she was eaten by a bear, some say she was kidnapped by an Indian, others say she drowned in the lake. All are false.

The teenaged Frances (Fannie) Hooe became known around Fort Wilkins when she lived with the Ruggles family on the post during the 1840s. (It was not uncommon for family members to join officers on extended visits.) Her sister was wife to the First Lieutenant, Daniel Ruggles (who later became a powerful general for the Confederacy.) As well as a descendant of famed Virginian George Mason, who laid the framework for our Bill of Rights, she was also an aunt of an aide to the escape of assassin John Wilkes Booth.

Ultimately, the winter and isolation proved too much for her, and after a brief stay in these remote regions, she returned to Virginia and died in Fredericksburg from cancer.

Several of the officers at the Fort named lakes after women in their lives. This include Lake Martha Stevenson, now known as Lake Manganese.

Dan,Copper Harbor--Yours is essentially the same story I heard when we visited Copper Harbor--except that we were told she(Fanny Hooe) returned home and married a few years later but never returned to Copper Harbor. Interesting all the tales that abound about her. Anyhow,I loved Copper Harbor and Lake Fanny Hooe....
