Mary Drew docked on Isle Royale on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 05:53 am:

This young man epitomizes the definition of carefree, summer fun. Without even seeing his face, you can just tell he has a big smile there, anticipating the thrill of landing with a huge splash. Caught in mid-air by Tim Bertsos, he sure looks triumphant with his form! So that's one thing to do on a dock in the U.P., but if you're not quite that adventuresome, let me suggest you take the pose of these two young ladies, spotted by Brita Haapla, just enjoying each others company and the beauty of the lake. Reminds me of when I was a kid and my folks used to rent a camp for a couple weeks in the summer. I'd spend hour upon hour either dangling my feet off the dock, or in the water with my old tire inner-tube float! Do people use those anymore?

That does not sound good, I meant and mean to say, I have an outsiders love of little girls:My husband and I do not have children; but if we do or will, I want darling little girls. The two pictured above are simply darling!!!

By Yooper in eastern PA on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 07:12 am:

It looks cold but refreshing! Especially since I'm sitting here in 90 degree temps on the east coast. Nothing says refreshing like a dip in Lake Superior!

By Bob on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 07:56 am:

ahh that looks refreshing.

we beat last weekends heat at Courtney Lake.

The pic of the boy jumping in the lake off the dock brings back many a wonderful summertime memory.
Mary, come to think of it, I haven't seen innertubes from semi trucks used in ages at the beaches. I remember my dad stopping at the local truck stop in the summer and loading up on truck innertubes for us kids. We were like the most popular kids with those tubes.

By sur5er on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 08:10 am:

Bob, Thanks for the pics of your camping trip...now that's my idea of camping...out in the middle of nowhere.
An Outside Love of Baby Girls: Girls rock!

By Sarah, Central WI on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 08:27 am:

Mary,

We use them on Lake Superior every year. Nothing compares to just floating on an inner tube in the lake.

By lmr in hancock on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:03 am:

Way to go Brita, when can I start taking lessons from you with my new digital camera?

We've even been in Lake Superior and can't remember it being so warm......77 degree water yesterday at Small Traverse.

By Judi C C, WI on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:05 am:

Bob. Thanks for the nice look at Courtney, from a Mass City gal.

By elm on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:17 am:

Thanks Bob for the pictures of Courtney Lake. Brought back some memories. We used to take our kids there when we lived in Mass City. Never thought of it as the middle of nowhere, just someplace special.

By Bob in Arizona on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:27 am:

The pictures are super COOL.I live in the desert west of Peoria and it was 118 Tuesday.
Anyone know the water temp??Bob

By Bob on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 09:48 am:

;-)

interesting view on the MTU web cams

looks like someone is flying a barage ballon
over houghton, and an interesting feature in upper
left corner is either a hovering black helicoptor or a spider. ;-)

Leave it to Brita to come up with another priceless Keweenaw children photo. My idea of fun: sitting on the dock or floating in waves on an innertube!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 10:35 am:

COOL! I remember the lakes in Michigan that way.

By June Cleaver on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 10:38 am:

Outside love of baby girls: believe me after nine long months of being a bit over weight, internal organs squished and squashed around, and then long labor, if you have a baby boy with ten fingers and toes you will be as joyful! If you have your girl you will feel the extra joy you desire!

By termoil, MI on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 10:59 am:

does it get any better then this?

By jim wi. on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 11:06 am:

By erica florida keys on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 11:26 am:

Pictures today are delightful. Love the one of the little girls. Good to be back home after Dennis forced us to take an unscheduled trip out of the Keys. Plenty of yard cleanup to do. And the pool is a mess. Got to get busy---everyone have a great day--it is so good to be alive!

By KJ Fremont, MI on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 11:45 am:

Hi everyone. Great photo's capturing the highlights of summer! I am planning a tubing trip for this weekend as a matter of fact. Still popular on the Muskegon River down here in Troll land.

By Missin the UP from NJ on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 12:15 pm:

Great pics today!
That picture of the little girls is PERFECT!! One is so thoughtful and the other full of giggles. So-o-o darn cute!

By Alice, Ventura, CA on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 12:17 pm:

Thank you jAPEi for the Virtual Finland site. WOW! Just plain incredible.

By Alice, Ventura, CA on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 12:20 pm:

Oh, I forgot to add, I can see why so many Finns settled in the UP. So many of the pictures of Finland looked like the pictures posted on Pasty.com. Also, you need to check out the Virtual Finland site when you have lots of time. There is so much to see and learn there. It covers a lot. Thanks again!

By up in da air on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 01:21 pm:

Bob,
I .think.. I saw a series of box kites flying on the roof in front of the Tech cam a few days ago.wonder what's ..up.

By YooperFinn,MI on Wednesday, July 13, 2005 - 03:42 pm:

Great summertime pics today! Temperature highs have been in the 80's and 90's here in Keweenawland for many days in a row now. If this keeps up, Superior will be bathwater-warm like the inland lakes in no time at all! Kiitos japei, for all the links to Finnish websites here. I have spent a year in Finland and yes, Alice, the scenery is very similar to the U.P. It was as if I had never left the Copper Country. Even the language was familiar :) Hyvää kesää kaikille. (have a good summer everyone)

By Fran,Ga on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 12:09 am:

Brita, your little girls are darling! What I wouldn't give to be sitting on the end of a dock in the U.P. This heat and humidity is soooo bad. If you are outside for over 5 min I sweat so much my hair is sopping wet. It is rather difficult to breathe also. Can't wait for winter.

By John Fields on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 12:25 pm:

LOOKS LIKE FUN OH TO BE A KID AGAIN

By Joyce Toivola on Thursday, July 14, 2005 - 11:08 pm:

Capital F-U-N: The tractor tube! The scrapes and scratches from the valve were usually almost faded by Christmas. Now I use my little wimpy inflatable plastic tube to drift along the shoreline, bobbing for rocks. It can't handle a gang like the old tractor tube did,but then I don't think I could handle the surprise flips anymore,or hold my own when competing for a diving space. Good memories. Great pics!
