Good Morning from ann arbor

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 - 07:50 am:

I notice several references about 'checks' in yesterday's discussion (apparently donations to Still Waters). I am aware of only one check which we have tried to track down (kosk from toronto), and don't recall heariing about any other missing mail. If you know of any mail which you suspect may not have made it, please email me (chopper@pasty.com) and we will follow up.

As for the current status of Still Waters, we have rooms immediately available, and welcome any ambulatory senior who needs living assistance, regardless of income. Thanks to all who have a part in the support of this Home for the Aged. Gifts are tax deductible.

Arrived Cairo 3/2/05 and leaving 4/20/05. Back to Philly, finally. :-)

Can anyone tell me if the smelt are running or if the morels are popping? My boyfriend and I are going to be in the Manistique or Munising area this weekend.

By Fred, Three Lakes on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 - 01:58 pm:

Lisa:

No morels yet, last year I found my first ones on April 29th in Marquette County. We could use some rain as well, when I find some morels I will post here. Haven't heard anything on smelt.

By Lisa, Fremont, MI on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 - 02:02 pm:

Thanks Fred! We need rain, too. It looks like we might get some tonight but who knows......

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 - 04:04 pm:

You guys were on late this morning. I was up, out of the house and almost behind my desk at the first posting. However, it is not easy getting on here once at school. looks like a good day for all. Yes, I do miss morels. We don't get any here.

By kosk in Toronto on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 - 05:39 pm:

We planted some morels in our garden. They
have not come up yet, but I will let you know if
we get lucky. Apparently they are tricky to
grow--especially, sad but true, from a kit.

Does anyone remember the town of HERMAN? by L'Anse? How did it start? What was there?? Logging? Sawmill???

By fun guy on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 - 07:08 pm:

morels like to live at the base of old elm trees

By kosk in Toronto on Tuesday, April 19, 2005 - 09:22 pm:

Dear just wondering,
Try the L'Anse Sentinel. Someone there
should know about Herman. I have seen but
do not own a book about Herman. My family
had relatives there who farmed there.

By downstate don on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 - 12:21 am:

Does anyone from downstate remember Sunny Elliot?
He would report the weather on one of the Detroit
stations. He would always announce the weather
in Herman. He would always say it was a iddy bitty
place in da U.P.

Susan from FL,

Got a call from my daughter tonight...is the sheriff department you work for hiring deputies? Email me, and I will explain. Thanks ;)

By Karen.... on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 - 02:21 am:

downstate don, I remember Sonny Elliott very well. He was always humorous. I've been away sooo long, I don't know what happened to him.

Have a great vacation the end of May, first of June and be very careful on 75. Not sure when we will return to the UP...probably not this summer or fall.

The Farmington Observer just published an article on Sonny who was inducted into the journalism hall of fame. Here is a link to the article.

Downstate Don....I remember Sonny Elliott as well...used to combine words for weather conditions...some pretty clever but nothing spings to mind...maybe "sold" for sunny and cold? Used to make reference to inky dinky Engadine. :)
Sur5er....as far as I know we are pretty much always hiring....fairly large department...nearly 3000 employees with several hundred deputies. What with Florida being a relatively transient state there is a fair turnover. Phone number is 727 582-6200. Just ask for personnel. Or their direct line is 727 582-6208, but if you dial it directly and it's busy, you're out of luck...use the main number and they can put you on hold. Any way I can help, just let me know. (I've hi-jacked Mom's computer for a few minutes just to check in.)

By Alicia , Mi on Thursday, April 21, 2005 - 08:18 am:

Just wondering
The town of Herman was named for Herman Karinen .

This village was founded by Herman Keranen in 1901and was named for him by Nels Majhannu; Edward Herkoner became its first postmaster on Jan. 13, 1902.
