Mike Schneider took what he labeled "a light ride" on Lake Superior to look at the East Channel Lighthouse and Pictured Rocks near Munising, recently. With the proximity in the two sandstone shots, I'm guessing he was kayaking when he snapped these photos. That first one of the Light is absolutely stunning, with the sky, the clouds, the water and the few leaves that were still hanging on that day. After the wind storms this week, I'm guessing those are gone now, too. Mike got right in close for a look at the sandstone, both regular colored and where the water and minerals have striped it and changed the color completely. His last shot, shows a wider view of the Pictured Rocks shoreline and the varied clouds in the sky, which Mike said were really moving that day, making interesting designs.

We can't let this day pass, without remembering the crew of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, who all went down with the ship 36 years ago today, near Whitefish Bay, which is to the east of where these pictures were taken. Please take a moment sometime during this day, to pause and remember the 29 men who lost their lives this fateful day in 1975, including Ransom Cundy, who grew up right here in the Keweenaw and is the father of one of our regular visitors, Cheryl Rozman. Thank you...

Cheryl Rozman, you are in my thoughts today.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, November 10, 2011 - 06:53 am:

Good morning. Cotton, we're thinking of you today. Gordon Lightfoot did a great job of immortalizing the Edmund Fitzgerald, at least in my opinion.

PS We had wind gusts here in mid-Michigan up to 44 mph yesterday afternoon, which should have been enough to kick up the lakes at least a bit, a day early.

Good morning,Cheryl -- Much love and hugs from all of us.

Click on the link above, S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald, there is a beautifully written tribute to Cheryl's father, Ransom Cundy.

Thinking of you today, Cotton. Will read the story of the Edmund
Fitzgerald to my students today and let them look at my postcards
and replica. Of course I'll play Gordon Lightfoot too--a Canadian
icon.

I'll be posting some version of Gordon Lightfoot's song on my Facebook this afternoon after work. Maybe you'd all like to do the same!

Thinking about you, Cheryl:( I know you're probably at Whitefish Point in honor of your father, and the rest of the crew, who went down on this awful day. I remember it like it was yesterday, that feeling of hopelessness for the families of these men. Prayers going out for you today, and for all of the surviving family members of these men.

On a brighter note, I love the East Channel lighthouse!! I have my own pictures of that lighthouse and I love looking at my pictures of Pictured Rocks.

God's Peace Cheryl, and to all the families.

Hello Pasty Cammers!

Hopefully someone from the Munising area is on the board today. I'm planning a hiking trip at Pictured Rocks the weekend of the 19th. I was wondering if there might be anyone in Munising who would be willing to meet me, ride with me to Grand Marais, and then drive my truck back to Munising? I was thinking $50 bucks would fair for this...

Thanks!
Nate

Excellent quality photos! Love the sky views! Cheryl Rozman and Pam Johnson, remembering your dads and all the crew on this sad day. May God lighten your burden today!

Does any one know where the love of God goes
when the waves turn the minutes to hours?
The searchers all say they'd have made Whitefish Bay
if they'd put fifteen more miles behind 'er.
They might have split up or they might have capsized;
they may have broke deep and took water.
And all that remains is the faces and the names
of the wives and the sons and the daughters.

In memory of the Edmund Fitzgerald and the 29 lives lost on November 10, 1975. May you all rest in peace.

Hollidays, just reading your post gave me goosebumps.....I love that song! Many years ago I did a painting of the Fitz and while doing it I played, over and over again, Gordon's tape of it. It helped inspire the painting, which is now in the home of Pam Johnson. (I met her via Boatnerd Regional site)

Saw a picture of hands touching the Edmund Fitzgerald Bell. They were Cheryls' hands.....

He will always be with you, Cheryl.

Remembering the Fitzgerald and the 29 men...
Cheryl, you and all the families and friends are in our prayers.

The song never gets old, Gordon Lightfoot will always be my hero for writing those lyrics.
What could ever be more fitting for that ship wreck? They will be remembered forever. It's my first knowledge of Lake Superior as a kid. Where was that ship wreck? I have to go there and see such a lake that can do such a thing. I've been traveling around the lake ever since.
