Nice pictures!! LOVED seeing the South American. That brings back so many childhood memories of standing outside at Keranen's waiting for it to go by. Then later, after people we met while camping there bought a camp down the road from Keranen's, we'd wait for it to go by. It was always so exciting. I think it went by on Tuesdays but not sure. Anyway, it's always fun to see pictures of that and remember........... Feel bad for people who didn't grow up there to see some of the things we got to see. It was an absolutely great place to grow up and be from. And believe me, once a yooper, always a yooper and proud of it!!!

Have a great Sunday, everybody

What beautiful pictures! Deb...you are so lucky in that you were born, grew up and lived in such an area of beauty! You really can call yourself a true Yooper, not a imitation or transplant!

Deb S.---I know what you mean. I was born in Houghton but left there in 1960 when my work took me to lower Michigan. Still find myself answering "I live in Grayling now but I'm from the UP" when asked where I'm from.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, July 10, 2011 - 01:26 pm:

I always ask people if they know where Houghton or Copper Harbor are. I always tell them I'm from the UP and most people don't even know what the UP is. Believe it or not, there are a lot of people who don't even know where Michigan is. Geez, everybody learned in history class at one time or another which state is surrounded by most of the Great Lakes!! Still love the area but wouldn't want to have to put up with that much snow........at least not yet:) Do go there at least 3 times a year though. My mom still lives in Lake Linden.

Try living in Texas and trying to describe that your from Upper Michigan; most folks here believe the world ends at the Red and Sabine Rivers.... J

While in the Navy, 51-53, I could not convince a mate from Texas that Superior was larger than Lake Texoma

You Yoopers are lucky that you grew UP in the UP. Wish I could have experienced that. It really is a great place. Moved here because I was born in Vienna, Austria, and it reminded me of home. As for transplants, I have met so many from downstate Michigan. Doesn't that count as a Yooper, after they've lived here for over 30 years? Maybe they're still considered as Trolls? Anyway, it doesn't matter where you are from, you're all UP here now and everyone gets along.

Capt Paul..trying to describe being from the U.P. to Texans would be a job all on it's own!! aah!

People all over the world have heard or read about The Mississippi. Lo and behold people from Chicago area don't even know that the Mighty Miss is the westrn border of Illinois! Map people like me get so frustrated with the ignorance of some Americans. Bet they can't even find New Jersey and those bobbleheads on the stupid reality show!

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Sunday, July 10, 2011 - 09:31 pm:

MsKatie----Just tell those folks you refered to that the Mighty Miss is where Chicago dumps all the water they steal from Lake Michigan that it got from Lake Superior. No wonder the lake level falls.
