With fresh snow this week, Joe Kirkish had the occasion to be up on the 7th floor of the Magnuson Hotel in downtown Houghton and said he couldn't resist pulling out his camera when he saw what was going on down below. The fresh snow, coupled with the comings and goings of vehicles and people on foot sure made some interesting patterns, when viewed from that high above the streets. My favorite is the top photo, for obvious reasons, one being the bridge in the background, but also for the unique circling and crossing of the wheel track design. The way they criss-cross, makes it look like the recently parked vehicle, could have come from either direction before pulling into that parking space. Nice eye Joe!

Not something you want to see on April 20th. We have it here too :(

By Diane C. Price (Czepyhashroom) on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 - 08:41 am:

Oh my, not what one expects to see on a late April day! We tied our record high of 90 degrees here in Tampa yesterday, ugh. Have a nice day

By Donna (Donna) on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 - 08:56 am:

Neat pics. I know...not what we wanna see, but it's a far superior choice to what some folks see out their windows in Japan!!! I'm thankful for "just" snow.

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 - 09:52 am:

Great photos Joe. Donna, I love that your glass is always half full! I too feel so fortunate that we do not have to worry about Tsunamis, tornadoes, wild fires, hurricanes etc. The major worry for us Yoopers is our roofs collapsing due to heavy snow. I certainly can live with the snow. SPRING will be nice when it does decide to shine around.

A much different scene in the Ohio Valley...our 'snow' is all liquid, accompanied by thunder/lightning/wind! Rough night last night, but thankfully, no damage! :}

Give me the snow. You keep the 90's

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 - 10:16 am:

Donna--My glass is usually half full too, but wildfires are a worry
for us in the UP. Remember the "Black River Falls Fire," on Co. Rd.
581 South of Ishpeming the other year? I understand that
unfortunately conditions are ripe for wildfires again this year in
parts of the UP.

Be glad you aren't in the Green Bay area. We got
10 inches of snow. It began about 1:00 pm yesterday and at 11:00 pm it even rained. And we had a white out with thunder and lightening. Odd to see the flash of lightening light up the snow.
We refused to blow out our drive way. Just drove
over the stuff. One forecast said a high of 61F
today!!!! I doubt it.

Daughter Sue in central Wisconsin drives 40 miles for work so took vacation day to avoid the 9" they got. Won't last long. She's driving down Sat. for Easter dinner at her dad's. Surely will be gone by then.

I remember 1973 my junior year, high school in April we got 13 in. of snow here in eastern Iowa! Darn, no school!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 - 02:52 pm:

I read in the paper today that Traverse City may set a new record for April snowfall, breaking the old record set in 1943.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 - 05:52 pm:

that car in the top pic must be 4 wheel drive..i see 4 tracks there

By Richard J. (Dick_fl) on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 - 06:06 pm:

Don't want to pop your bubble Dave but most cars in this country have 4 wheels and they all leave tracks. ;-)

Anyway, I lived in Florida for 40 years so I have had my fill of hot weather. I'm glad to be back north now even if it is only Milwaukee and not God's Country.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 - 06:13 pm:

I would take almost anything over what we've been getting. Yesterday Houston set a record of 92 and today I just looked and the backyard gauge reads 94, and I tend to believe it!! Combine that with no good soaking rain since November and most of Texas is in a dire situation. Almost every county now has a burn ban in place and there is no end in sight to the heat or dryness.

I'm afraid the only thing that will break this pattern is a good hurricane.....

I live in the western 'burbs of Minneapolis. We picked up 3" of snow Tuesday night.
