Judy Byykkonen must really have a green thumb or maybe during the winter months it's called a white thumb. Either way, her first photo sure looks like there are some flowers growing in the midst of the cold Keweenaw winter, but when we take a closer look in the second shot, it seems to be some bright yellow leaves. I'm thinking some type of weed, but a hardy one, like the greenery standing tall along with it. Kind of nice to have that illusion of flowers in the midst of winter, though.
That's not all that Judy found growing where it normally doesn't, her third photo shows what resembles giant cotton on a pine tree, looking like it's ready to be plucked off the branch. It amazes me that the branches can hold the weight of that much snow. But then, the Keweenaw is an amazing place! ;->

That is strange, could it be artificial?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 07:53 am:

Good morning ~

What would pollinate those flowers this time of year? Maybe just wind?

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 08:03 am:

I saw something odd as well, I honestly saw a Robin yesterday at my feeder.

By Jacobsville (Barb) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 08:32 am:

The yellow flowers look like orchids to me.

By Theresa R. Brunk (Trb0013) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 08:45 am:

Yes they are all plastic. Artificial yellow orchids and a frond of some kind. But plastic none the less.

By Joe Nycz (Joeyjo) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 08:51 am:

Yes these are orchids and be advised orchids are not just a tropical , they grow in the wild in cold regions such as Alaska.

The Calumet theater roof is going backward in the voting. Last week it was no. 16. For one day it hit 15 and is now at 17. We really need that theater. Spring thaws are not going to help that roof. Please vote--daily, and more if you have several computers.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 09:23 am:

I don't uderstand. I can vote every 61 minutes. I do this from work or home. Doesn't this work for others? If we're going to win we have to vote. Charlie, Mary, am I right about the voting?

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 09:24 am:

UNDERSTAND

Donna and all, I have tried for 2 days to vote and when I sign in there are no words to type. I had to text my vote in today. Do we have a fix for that do we know?

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 10:03 am:

Norma...I don't know...I know voting on that site is not always a pleasant experience. I wish it was much easier....

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 10:06 am:

When we still lived downstate, I was so tired of one particular winter, that I took a bunch of 1.00 store flowers and put them in a pot and sat them on the table on the patio. Everytime I looked, it made me feel a little better. ;O)

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 10:57 am:

Rowdy,
You can go back and vote, but another vote for the same place in one day will not count. (except from another computer?)

There's a button at the bottom which tells you how many votes you have remaining for the day.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 11:02 am:

Maija: Thanks, that makes sense from what I've seen. How about different email addresses from the same computer? Does that register a vote?

maija in Commerce Township (Maija):
"You can go back and vote, but another vote for the same place in one day will not count. (except from another computer?)"

How can you tell whether your vote counted or not?

1. The first time I visit that site, when I click on the Vote for this idea button:

Vote invite

I get a pop-up window with a log-in invitation, including the "crazy text" to enter.

When I enter all the requested information and click on the Sign In button the pop-up window goes away, and I presume the vote was counted.

2. If I immediately try to repeat the process (using the same browser, and without leaving the site) by clicking on the Vote for this idea button again, I do not get another pop-up log-in invitation, instead the dark blue field on the right side of the image changes to this:

Vote invite

... and I do not get a second pop-up window, so evidently I can't vote again during one visit to the site.

However, If I go there again, later in the day, I can complete another sequence as in (1) above. Did that vote count? It would appear that it did.

If I immediately try to repeat the process a second time, I get the same result as in (2) above.

So it would appear that I can vote once per visit, on any number of visits per day.

In fact, while collecting the images for this post I was apparently able to vote once from the Firefox browser, then a second time using MS Internet Explorer, all within mere minutes.

All of the above using only one single email address.

So the question remains: How do I tell if/when a vote counts?

I'm on wireless and I wait until the site is fully loaded before I log off. I wonder if that makes a difference? And I agree, it is not a quick and easy voting site.

Amazing + beautiful!

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 04:10 pm:

Whether the flower is artificial or real it is a beautiful photo. Thanks Judy for all three. I like flowers in the winter. I brought my hibiscus inside late fall and just before Christmas it bloomed. I was so surprise and extremely happy.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 04:39 pm:

Interesting to hear that I'm not the only one who's unable to vote. For months I haven't been able to vote as it's all Greek to me. Been complaing all along. Personally I think the whole thing is a gimmic just playing people for nothing. Haven't worked it out since we were voting for animal rescue places. Just a rack for publicity!!!!!!!!!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 08:10 pm:

I can tell when my vote is complete because I hear the sound of a can of pop opening and pouring into a glass. I voted twice today; once this morning and again just now. I also voted by texting from my cell.

By dee janis (Scotsmam) on Monday, January 17, 2011 - 11:31 pm:

The flower is an artificial copy of a real orchid
known as an Oncidium, commonly known as a Dancing
Lady.

Now I'm going to go vote.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 - 05:11 am:

I voted too.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 - 05:56 am:

Your vote doesn't count when you hear the Pepsi fizz. You have to hit "vote for this idea" again and then you get the 'thank you' message. You can go back immediately and vote for another place, and you get the 'thank you' immediately. At the bottom of the page is a scrolling "how many votes left today" message. I've never been able to vote twice for the Calumet Theater or Copper Harbor in one day.
