Thomas,

There's a rather interesting connection between your posting and today's Day in History about the Ontonagon Boulder. On October 19, 1843, while the Ontonagon Boulder was still on display in Detroit, a correspondent for the New York Herald using the name "John Jones Jr. of New York" wrote a letter to that newspaper describing in remarkable detail the removal of the "Copper Rock" from its ancient resting place on the west branch of the Ontonagon River, which had been accomplished just a couple of months earlier. In part, Jones wrote:

"On the top of the hill they made a capstan, in order to haul the car and rock forward on rollers. This plan did not work well, and all one afternoon they only moved it thirteen rods on level ground; they then sent back to the store house for the car wheels and more provisions. Then they cut out timber and made two sections of a stout wooden track, each twenty five feet long; they pried up the rock, took the car bottom from under it, cut into the car bottom half way, fitted the axles in, and completed the rail car. The rock was then elevated five feet by supports; the track was laid under it, the car also rolled on the track under the rock; the blockings and supports gradually taken away to ease the rock down to the car bed (which stood ten inches above the rail track, the wheels being fourteen inches high) and about dusk this monster was laid snugly, for the first time, at least in 5847 years, on a rail car and a railroad."

[Note Jones's use of 4004 BC for the origin of the earth in his letter: 4004 + 1843 = 5847 years]

That IS interesting. Sounds like Mr. Jones read Bishop Ussher's findings for himself.

Go to freep.com and scroll down to Metro Detroit section and there is a little story under 'This week in Michigan History' U.P. site established as a national treasure.

It seems from when I posted the freep. com story at 6:54 am, the story is gone. Sorry.

Bob,

That was the article but, your article seems to have pictures and a graphic of the peninsula. I like your story better.

The article I read this morning mentioned the C+H Mine and the Quincy Mine, too. Like yours better.;O)

I just listened to the Pasty Cameo, 'I love you truly' and it sounds like the music I like to listen to on my moms wind up Victrola that I have. LOVE IT.
