Here in the Copper Country there has been some windy weather of late and thanks to Halli Lindley, we're getting a look at some of the wave and wind action from that storm. Look closely at the first photo, you can see the spray coming off the top of the wave from the gusts of wind whipping around. Now those are some serious whitecaps out there on Lake Superior.

Halli didn't just go to check out the waves in Rabbit Bay, she was also out there to check on their "camp" and what she found was a big pine tree laying on top of the roof and blocking the doorway. Once the tree was removed, they were relieved to find there was no damage to the camp at all... close call on that one. Halli mentioned that she'd like to replace that tree, maybe plant a mountain ash in it's place. To which her hubby, Tom replied that he was thinking more along the lines of planting a garage there, instead! :->

Heavy sigh. Love them waves.
What a scare if somebody would've happened to be inside ...

Wow! Amazing waves! I can hear the crashing sound just looking at those pics. This will certainly be a memorable storm.

Whoa...Agate territories have GOT to have some dandy changes!!!!

"One of the great dreams of man must be to find some place between the extremes of nature and civilization where it is possible to live without regret." Wise words the "Lake" reminds us of often...

Hi
I heard that there were 20ft waves in Lake Superior. For the shorter storm Tuesday, the weather guys were comparing it, in terms of barometric pressure, to the storm that sunk the Edmund Fitzgerald.

By Dale Beitz (Dbeitz) on Thursday, October 28, 2010 - 08:28 am:

And where does one buy garage seed? I don't remember seeing that at the Lansing area home & garden centers. My current garage is in bad shape, having a source for garage seed so I can plant a new one could be useful in the next year or so.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, October 28, 2010 - 08:55 am:

Even way down here in Iowa, weathermen/women were comparing this low pressure system that brought on these high winds to the storm of the Edmund Fitzgerald, I was impressed.

Sorry about the home repair coming up, but love the pictures of the rushing waves. I write of these in my article about my experiences aboard the EDMUND FITZGERALD back in 1958.

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Thursday, October 28, 2010 - 09:02 am:

Dale, as big as garages are, it probably takes years to grow one from seed. Maybe thats why there's no market for garage seed. ; >)

Eddyfitz...that is great reading! I bookmarked it. Thankyou!

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Thursday, October 28, 2010 - 09:13 am:

That explains the freighters lying at anchor, here the waves seemed small and the south winds blew them mostly offshore. Those same winds tore out a lot of trees which were prepared for north winds (as usual) causing power outages and other damage and lots of work for the road crews.

By Tom (Tom) on Thursday, October 28, 2010 - 11:07 am:

Alex, are referring to the huge waves on Maui? Been there---they are monsters but Superior 20 footers are what I call vicious. Been on the Queen from Isle Royale to Copper Harbor in 10+ footers and got sick as a dog. Can't imagine being on the lake the last few days.
I was hoping someone had taken some pictures of ships in Big Portage------if any.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, October 28, 2010 - 11:30 am:

Tom...that is what I thought of when I saw the first photo. Someone mentions 26+ waves yesterday. I work in a 2-story building which is 20-25 ft. high and it is hard to imagine a wall of water that size. I was also glad to see that the big-bad wolf did not blow that house down.

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Thursday, October 28, 2010 - 12:06 pm:

Hi
Eddyfitz, I saw the following in your linked document: " While the Fitzgerald encountered 80 mph winds as it entered northern Lake Huron, the steamer Carl D. Bradley sank only 100 miles west on Lake Michigan. ". Have you ever read the account of the sinking of the Bradley in "Great Lakes Shipwrecks and Survivals", by William Ratigan? The storm that sank the Bradley was also mentioned by TV meteorologists when talking about our recent weather.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, October 28, 2010 - 02:15 pm:

The 'gale-force' winds that stir up the Lakes are always fun to watch, however, the tornado that set down near our son and d-i-l's apt. in Chattanooga, TN Tuesday night does not stir up the same kind of 'fun' feeling. Thankfully they nor their apt. complex were touched. More gray hairs for mom!:(

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Thursday, October 28, 2010 - 03:02 pm:

Those waves look pretty tense.

By Danielle L. Adams (Badkid) on Thursday, October 28, 2010 - 03:19 pm:

I was out yesterday seeking out the freighter that docked near Chassell...and what did I find..the Herbert C. Jackson!! As if the waves on superior were bad enough..it was windy as can be yesterday when I went out searching, it was literally blowing me around.

By Wes Scott (Travelnorth) on Thursday, October 28, 2010 - 05:57 pm:

What a storm! I was wave watching on the live cams and reading all the accounts. I watched my large pine trees all day as I feared what you have posted. I got lucky and they survived.
A storm like that may never happen again in our lifetimes??

By Wes Scott (Travelnorth) on Friday, October 29, 2010 - 01:56 am:

Eddyfitz your a very good writer! I really enjoyed your story of the maiden voyage on the ship. I was in your home town and the Keweenaw this last September and it's really a wonderful area.
