Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 - 07:17 am:

We come to the end of August and with it the end of summer, as fall is quickly approaching. It is our tradition here at Pasty Central, to take this last day of the month and dedicate a sunrise/sunset photo to the memory of those that have gone on before us. This month we remember:

John Gronewald
Jack Horkheimer
James Mattila, Sr.
Marilyn Poirier
Dennis Regan
Servicemen and women who've given their all

Part of this monthly tradition is to invite all you visitors to add the names of folks you'd like to remember here on this page, too, so feel free to do so. Special thanks to Sally Beaudette for the beautiful sunset for today's reflection.

Remembering my grandmother, Irene Normand, who died in August of 1981. Hard to believe it's been that long already. Also remembering her mother, who also died in August some time in the 60's. Remembering my grandfather, Edmund Durocher, who died in August of 1963.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 - 07:35 am:

A personal note about two of this month's honored individuals. John Gronewald was a fellow worker at Still Waters, and later at Pasty Central. He was one of the most helpful, hard-working people I have ever known. I will always remember John for the effort and care he took to make life better for the elderly Still Waters residents, especially at the time the Home closed. (Which, by the way, is reopening next month.)

For the many amateur photographers in the U.P. we have noted a name which they will identify with: Jack Horkheimer - known as the 'Star Gazer' - who passed away earlier this month. When we moved to the U.P. with its clear atmosphere, Jack's short, pithy descriptions of lights in the night sky gave us a greater appreciation of God's handiwork.

By David E. Woon (Dewoon) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 - 07:38 am:

Our mother, Mary Woon, passed away this month at the age of 82 after stuggling against lymphoma for several years. She loved the UP and the Copper Country and had been traveling up there since before 1960. The highlight of our summers has been spending time at our cottage on Lake Superior near Eagle Harbor. Her last visit to the UP was a year ago. We all knew her time might be very limited, but we didn't guess it would be her last trip up there. Among so many things that make the Keweenaw wonderful, she loved to collect driftwood and small stones for craft projects, many of which she gave away. We miss her very much.

By Pat & Glenda (Gormfrog) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 - 07:47 am:

Still Waters reopening next month? Good news, how is this coming about? Think we would all appreciate updated information... Pasty Central involved?

Charlie says:

I should have mentioned that the facility is reopening as GardenView Assisted Living and Memory Care. We will have more information on it in coming days, and you can be sure that Pasty Central will have a part in getting the word out.

I got a phone call a few days ago that a very special person, I use to work with downstate, passed away. She had a stroke a couple months ago and never recovered from it. She was a very special person to me, not just as a co-worker, but also a friend.

By Nancy L.Mahrley (Nlmbrightonmi) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 - 08:04 am:

A dear and treasured friend, Irene (Rana) Geissler Suter of Bushnell, Il. was called to her heavenly home on Aug. 4th.......born and raised in Copper City and graduated from Calumet High School in 1953. Will be greatly missed by family and friends but we know she's at peace because of her strong faith and devotion to her Savior. She'll live in our hearts forever!

By Therese (Therese) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 - 08:32 am:

A very special man, Ronn Serba, died in an accident earlier this month. He and his wife Billie own a B&B just north of Harbor Springs in the Lower P. He was an interior designer in search of perfection in all he did. At his funeral, Fr Joe said Ronn always pushed a little beyond what most people would settle for. He had an unbounded generousity for his church, Holy Childhood of Jesus. We all miss him very much and will miss him even more as the months go by.

By Theresa R. Brunk (Trb0013) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 - 08:59 am:

My nephew Matthew Ian Brunk who died 9 years past August 2001. We miss you and your Papa, Mattie. Forever in our hearts, your Auntie Bee

Yesterday we buried our son-in-law Ray Green. Gone too soon but many friends said farewell along with his especially large family. His beloved black Allis Chalmers followed him all thru the services, his "Blacksheep '49". A good ol' country boy will be missed.

By Rebecca Middlebrook (Mspuppers) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 - 09:44 am:

My daughter, Kaitlyn Elizabeth, who was born still in July. We'll see you soon, Katie-bug.

By Joy Brewer (Joy) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 - 09:49 am:

I would like to remember my mother, Dorothy Erickson; she died on July 8th of this year. She would have celebrated her 87th birthday on August 4th. Mom was born in Duluth, MN, but moved with her Yooper parents to Iron Mountain as a very young child. What I remember most about her is that she taught her children and grandchildren to always touch people in a very positive way. She did this by always opening her home to everyone, especially all the neighborhood children, who would come to play, kick the can or other various childhood games in our yard. She is greatly missed by her family, and her many friends. My only hope is that her legacy of life continues through me, my sons and grandsons.

Remembering my Uncle Reynold Burbank who passed away last month in Indiana. I never got to post it last month. He was born in the UP & came here to visit the Chassell,Dollar Bay & Hubbell region very summer. He was a loving husband, father & grandfather. He'll be definitely be missed but now they have reassurance that he is reunited with his loving wife Alice(Ewen) Burbank.

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 - 01:55 pm:

Remembering the four drowning victims from the Picnic Rocks in Marquette. It's been six this summer. Even with warnings, a memorial, signs of danger posted, meetings to find ways to prevent these drownings people still feel they have to challenge swimming to the rocks from shore. It's so sad to see this happen every summer.

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 - 01:57 pm:

It was four victims this past month & six for the summer.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 - 03:47 pm:
