When visitors first get a close-up look at the waters of Lake Superior, the first comment you usually hear is how clear the water is. Thanks to Melanie Hakala Rossi, we get to view that clarity here today, right from the comfort of home. There are advantages to that, no walking on all those rocks, barefeet and no hot sun making you sweat and burn, to name a few, but, there are also some disadvantages, too. Like, you can't smell the freshness of the air on the shores of the Big Lake; you don't get to cool yourself down by standing ankle deep (or deeper) in the cold water; and you can't stoop down, pick up a rock and try to skim it across the smooth surface of a quieted Superior shore. On the other hand, if you're miles away and aren't able to make a trek to her shores, viewing shots like these will at least hold you over until you can once again be right there in person. Thanks for bringing Superior to us today, Melanie!

Looking at these pretty pictures, I just felt my blood pressure lower.

So pretty! And it's not so cool this year!!!!

By Joy Brewer (Joy) on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 - 08:50 am:

You are right Deb about the lake not being as cold as it has been. I was able to walk in it quite awhile and not have cold feet. If it warms up like the other lakes, it won't be clear very long.

I wouldn't mind taking a dip in that water. The humidity with the temp is horrendous this week!

You do realize that supposedly when the Big Lake is warmer like this, that it means we'll have a snowier winter...has to do with Superior not freezing over because it's water is warmer and then we get more lake effect snow. :-(

The main goal of my trip to LacLaBelle next month is twofold. Peace and relaxation in that cabin and being on the beach and walking in those fabulous waters. (Even if it's colder by then). The gift shops and sightseeing comes next. I'm so excited! Of course the anticipation is a big part of the fun. Maybe I'll even run into some of my pasty friends there ?

These shots just tug at my memory heart strings! It was always amazing to me that you could see to the bottom so easily. I was mezmerized by that more times than I can count. Thanks for making me smile at the memories yet again this morning. Gosh, I love this site!

These photos bring a song lyric to mind (Lee Shore):
Here is one like sunrise
It's older than you know
It's still lying there where some careless wave
Forgot it long ago

Sorry Mary, but I have to disagree. I can't imagine ANY disadvantage to having my feet right there, right now - especially the smooth stones, cool refreshing water and the warm sun! :D

Hi
I was up in the Au Sable Point lighthouse in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore once. You can see the rocks and reefs under the clear water from that tower; pretty neat, and a visual explanation of why shipwrecks occurred along that coast.

Looks like the place Dr. Nat and I were at yesterday wandering around in the water. Too bad your not at the cabin right now U.C.; we would have surely stopped in for a visit.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 - 04:52 pm:

Hummmm, Mary heard maybe a lot of snow? Well, we will be U.P. with the snowmobiles then for some great snowmobiling, and support the U.P. economy!

La Nina is forcasted and alot of snow this winter. But it's too early to be talking about that. Au Sable area is wonderful. Heaven! I will be in the U.P in two weeks time. I really am looking forward to ten days of wonderful beauty.
It's refreshing to the soul as putting your feet into that water. Take the time to enjoy scenic wonders of the world and nice people and good food.
