Looking at this sign that Marsha Galbraith spotted on her visit to the Seney Wildlife Refuge, you might think it's a paradise that’s "for the birds." But you can see by the next two photos from Pat and Glenda Keiran and Barb Bremigan, that with all the different waterways around the preserve, it's home to many critters besides the fishing birds that sign is talking about. Marsha also took a tour of the visitor center, which is on Highway M-77, approximately three miles north of Germfask. While there, she found some interesting specimens of the other inhabitants at the refuge, which they have on display for hands on exploration by children of all ages. It's quite the paradise for nature's own and worth a stop when you're traveling by.

Seney: Time in the wild, like time in meditation, reminds us how much of what we ordinarily do is mere dithering, how much of what we own is mere encumbrance.

Looks like a fun time!

Is that observation tower still there on the refuge? I remember climbing it oh-so-many years ago and gaining an appreciation of the large expanse of this area.

Nice photos...there is a website with a link to the Seney webcam. This website has many other interesting UP webcam links, including one for Hiawatha Lodge, which is the cabin that I went to as a child and is my connection to the UP.
The links are on the left hand side of the webpage: http://www.yooperland.com/

"Good afternoon",If it is worth anything, I'am still in the Royal Oak Beaumont hospital. The Doctor removed the lower right protion of my lung. I've been here over a week, we are waiting for a small hole to close, then they will take this chest tube out. I have a family renuion to attend the 7th of August. I wish to thank all for the well wishes.

What a coincidence! Just yesterday I received my copy of Saving Our Sons: How the Civilian Conservation Corps Rescued a Generation of Upper Michigan Men by Larry Chabot, which talks about the CCC's work at Seney and other places. I think this is where my dad was posted while he was in the CCC. Good job, Dad!
