When you talk camping here in the Keweenaw, it doesn't always mean a tow behind trailer that you plug into electricity and running water at a campground. No, sometimes it means REALLY roughing it in tents, that you've carried in, along with all your water and food. That's what Brooke Gubacz and crew recently did at the mouth of the Montreal River. You can only drive so far and then the rest of the way is about a mile or so hike, which doesn't sound like much, until you're lugging gallons of water and food for several days stay. But oh the rewards... just look at the scenery that surrounded them once they set up camp right there on the shores of Lake Superior. With both the water of the Big Lake and with the falls rushing down alongside of them, must have felt like they were in paradise. The bottom photo is a shot of the upper Montreal Falls, which is another hike to get to, so I guess these hearty campers, did some additional hiking around the area, not just the trek in to the campsite. Some folks sure know how to live!

Nice pictures Brooke! Looks like Brooke had good helpers to help with the lugging of supplies!

To poke a wood fire is more solid enjoyment than almost anything else in the world!

Now that's my kind of camping! Although they probably didn't have to hike water in, they probably just brought a light weight filter.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Sunday, July 18, 2010 - 07:11 pm:

We had to hike in water, but we went again this past weekend and now we have a filter. We were NEVER hiking in water anywhere ever again. We had a great time that time and this one. The kids are real troopers!

Thanks guys!
