Judging by the car in the background, it was probably a 1920's camping trip immortalized in this Shoebox Memory, provided by Jeanette Baker. It was among some old photos of her grandmother Isabelle Haanpaa LeClair of Lanse. Her families were Haanpaa, Eliasen and Tollefson, and there's probably a few of each in this crowded shot. Pack up the babies and grab the old ladies...

Traffic across the U.P. has begun to ramp up this weekend, like so many Memorial Day weekends. Though a lot of the snowbirds have already returned because of an early Spring, this weekend really makes it official: winter is really gone. Our thanks to Jeanette for today's glimpse of the past, and we would welcome more scenes from U.P. Summer vacations in the coming months.

Have a good week :o)

Those are some pretty 'hot' bathing costumes (as I believe they were called back then). No need to worry about tan lines in those suits. Is that one girl wearing a fashionable swim cap? What a great picture!

This shows how long tourism has been part of Michigan's economy.

Lots of good memories of picnics/gatherings out at Calumet Waterworks Park, Twin Lakes, Van Riper Park even tho dad didnt have a car in the 40's. Thankful to the Vairo neighbors for gathering us all up and enjoying a good family picnic. I am now going thru our 60 years of pictures so I may submit a few later in the year.)

Again everyone have a safe Memorial Day and give thanks to the veterans that have served to keep us all safe. (as a 16 year old and a member of the 107th Engrs in Calumet we marched out to Lakeview Cemetary?? for services.)

I like the little quote from Neil Diamond's Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show, rather fitting!
