What a great shot of a red fox, ambling along on the shores of Lake Superior. Karl Johnson said he was out for a walk along the beachfront near Waterworks Park, when he spotted this guy on beach patrol himself. Karl shot off this picture as soon as he spotted him and just before his camera battery chose the most inopportune time to give out completely. He was quite disappointed, as the fox strolled much closer to him, but he couldn't document that with a dead camera. We'll just have to take his word for it... even without closer shots, this one here today is still quite a sight.

WOW!!! What a great shot! Did he walk past you? Or turn around and high-tail it out of there?

That's a great picture. I love the way he walked out of the shadows so we could see his face so clearly. Thanks for sharing.

I know about the batteries going at the wrong time. A lot of times in between taking pictures I put my camera under my arm to keep it somewhat warm. It helps me while taking pictures.

Oh boy do I know about camera batteries going dead at the wrong time. While on Isle Royale two years ago, I was hiking up near Mt. Franklin and had a bull moose come up behind me on the trail. He decided to eat 10 feet from me. I got two poor pics trying to make setting adjustments when the battery suddenly went dead

What an awesome picture of this fox! This morning at 3 a.m. I was awaken by a pack of yipping coyotes about 300 ft. from our house in our pasture. It was pretty neat seeing them passing by under the moon's light.

CCHS is #1 in Michigan, and #9 in the NATION!!!

When you said the fox appeared right before someting died. I was all set for a tale of a hunt ;>)

I would just like to remember my brother SGT.Edward L. Kolka who was killed in action in Vietnam on this day 1968. I is hard to believe it has been 42 years. I miss him every day. If Ed had seen that fox, the pelt would have been hanging in out basement. He loved fox hunting and trapping.

Dead batteries or camera broken,

Puled out of my driveway 3 years ago and ended up getting real close to a bear, so close I could hear him huffing and puffing as he walked, that was a bummer.

At least he got the one shot and it is lovely. Did anyone else notice that the new National Geographic has a cover article on wolves this month? Reading it may help everyone understand this animal a little better. It probably won't change any minds but increased understanding is always good.

Beautiful shot! I always get a little shiver when I see a fox -- they are so special, esp. the red ones.

I, too, expected the next picture to be of the fox w/ a mouth full of feathers! :)

That depends on who you ask!

Fully welcomed? I'm not sure what that means, but above all, they should be respected, like all wild animals. A wolf (or bear or any wild animal, particularly a predator) is potentially dangerous if it becomes habituated to humans, especially by associating us with food. If people truly love wild animals, they should leave them alone (i.e. not feed them or encourage them to come closer). An animal that is afraid of humans and keeps its distance is more likely to survive than a "friendly" one, who often will end up dead (either by crossing paths with a hunter or poacher or by attacking someone and ending up destroyed by the DNR).

Having said that, these are beautiful and rare photos, and thank you for sharing them. (I hope it doesn't mean these animals are too habituated to humans.)
