The sunsets here in the Keweenaw lately have been beautiful and thanks to Brita Haapala the beauty is contained here on these pages. It's neat how Brita took both pictures of ordinary things you find all around outdoors, but then she put them against the blushing sky to highlight them even more. The bulrush standing there so tall and the barren apple tree branches all gnarled from years of producing apples, aren't really the first thing you notice in these shots, it's the color of the sky as the sun slowly slips below the horizon that first catches your eye. Then the rest of the picture takes shape. The Keweenaw at its finest.

Good luck to all the Tech students in winning the competition this year.

I noticed the bullrush and the apple tree first. Then I noticed the sky. But either way, those are some great shots!

Inquiring minds want to know.
Where the heck did Toivo go.

Rowdy,

A few years ago - after his 3 month tour of all 50 states - Toivo was the victim of identity theft, by an impostor in a pasty outfit. He moved out west somewhere, and we're hoping he'll move back home to the U.P. one of these days.

Beautiful pictures! I had an experience with bulrush (cattails) once....had collected several dry ones, kept them in a large vase sitting on the living room floor, then one day after about having them for 5 years, they 'exploded' sending seeds/fluff all over the floor!:]

By Helen Marie Chamberlain (Helen) on Thursday, February 4, 2010 - 11:38 am:

LOL, Shirley, I, too, have had bulrushes in vases in the house but didn't keep them long enough to explode on me. That's funny. Pictures are wonderful. Thanks, Brita.

Are you sure that's not a corn dog? I just had lunch and now I'm hungry again.

Spraying cattails with hairspray will usually keep them from exploding.

There's some 'roughed-up' snow on the canal on BridgeCam today. Hope someone didn't break thru the ice on a snowmobile...

Beautiful photos.

Rowdy - I had forgotten that Toivo left a clue each day about his real identity in the write up for each state he passed through. I can't remember if anybody decoded it?

Hard to believe that was back in 2003.

Toivo's tour was entertaining!! Enjoyed it a lot!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, February 4, 2010 - 03:30 pm:

Helen, the really funny thing about the exploding cattails is that they were moved (in a moving van) from the Cincinnati area to Bakersfield, Calif., carefully wrapped in shipping paper by the packers, then moved back to this area where I kept them for all those years, really testing to see how long they'd last. Knew absolutely nothing about the chance they'd explode, so you can imagine my surprise.:O Thanks for your tip, Eugenia, if I ever collect any more, I'll spray 'em. ;>
