Here is a different angle of a business that appeared recently in the MTU TechAlum Newsletter. Wonder if any Pasty Cam visitors have similar memories?

Short notes this morning, traveling back from out east, trying to beat the weather...

Have a good week :o)

And just think...it was probably ALL made in the USA!!!

Went shopping yesterday, and compared the ZIPLOC bags to the "store brand". ZIPLOC, made in Thailand. STORE BRAND...made in the USA.

I bought the store brand, and it's beyond time we ALL do this! It's up to us folks, let's bring our jobs home. No one else seems to be able to do it for us...so LET'S ALL DO IT!

I've also heard that when you end up talking to India in a call center, KEEP TELLING whoever is on the other end..."I want to speak to someone who speaks English" and they HAVE to pass your call on. They are reopening call centers in the USA to handle the call volumn.

Bless us all! (and sorry about the rant)

Neat pic, I like seeing the older cars with all their character, buildings too. Yea Charlie be safe out there. Hey Donna, I'll keep a watchful eye on what I buy (hey made a ryme). Happy Morning to you all.

Does anyone remember what year the Houghton Flour Mill closed? I remember going there to get truckloads of feed in the mid 60's with Ted Koskela for their dairy cows. I don't remember what kind of feed they got from there but they would mix it with ground oats which they grew on their own farm. Right on Donna; I agree 100%. The car in the foreground with the roof rack is a 1960 Chevy, probably built in Detroit.

Thanks 4 sharing these historic pics.

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Sunday, January 24, 2010 - 09:51 am:

The mill was owned by Milo and Julia Slagg. When her husband died, Julia took over as manager. Later, the manager was Curt Eggleston who was active in local politics. (Curt was married to Ann Moffat, daughter of a local Scottish couple.) The mill was located on the waterfront straight down from Franklin Square and on the east end of what is now the Isle Royale National Park property. The photos are taken from the waterfront looking southeast. I believe that after the mill closed Erickson Feed & Seed started their business there. Those folks may be able to verify the closing date of the mill. My husband and I lived at Franklin Square and often took walks down there.

"On the daily Cam Notes picture page please keep comments on the topic, and use 'What's Up' to post other items of intrest."

I was reminded of this sites policy this past week so in posting this I am continuing the vigilent 'content placing' that others have been attempting. Happy to help.......

By Robert Moffat (Rmoffat) on Sunday, January 24, 2010 - 10:43 am:

Curt Eggleston was my uncle, his father-in-law, my grandfather had the Moffat/Crown Bakery in Houghton, my parents were John and Mary(Wieber)Moffat, I remember visits to the Mill when I was a kid. Thanks for the memories

By Frank Drake (Ddproeng) on Sunday, January 24, 2010 - 11:08 am:

Does anyone know what industry was located east of the Carroll foundry? Currently this would be he location of the Super 8 "extra" parking lot. I have an old board from the water front and wonder what industry might have been there.

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, January 24, 2010 - 11:21 am:

Good Morning. 34 degrees with rain and wet snow here in Houghton. Have a great day everyone.

By E. Neil Harri (Ilmayksi) on Sunday, January 24, 2010 - 11:22 am:

That business was probably supported by the train
that used to run right by there.

By Ruth Beljan (Rbeljan) on Sunday, January 24, 2010 - 11:40 am:

This really brought back memories of going there with my Dad when, if I recall correctly, he'd bring bags of oats & they'd grind it up for his feed for our cows. I just loved the "smell" of that place!

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Sunday, January 24, 2010 - 12:49 pm:

Hi Rob----Didn't know you were a Pasty watcher. I was very fond of your grandparents and loved the smell of their bakery. I'm in mid Florida for the winter, again. Get notes from your sister, Meg, from time to time. Nice "seeing" you again. Uncle Dick

Old photos, I love 'em. These are quite clear and focused. Must've been a good camera in it's day.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Sunday, January 24, 2010 - 01:57 pm:

Ranting about Ziplock bags? Sure sign of cabin fever...lol! I'm going snowmobiling.

Probably taken with a Graflex Speed Graphic using 4"x5" film. The old Speeds are still in use today just not by the news media anymore and film of many varieties is still available.

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, January 25, 2010 - 05:59 am:

OOPS....sorry...didn't realize that wanting jobs back in the USA was going to offend folks. SORRY!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, January 25, 2010 - 06:11 am:

I am quite sure it does not 'offend' people as much as there is a page to post it on....

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Monday, January 25, 2010 - 08:33 am:

I remember eating middling (sp) out of the bin.

By John Sullivan (Jsullivan) on Monday, January 25, 2010 - 09:55 am:

Messner Coal Dock was East of the Flour Mill I am told, further East was a railroad yard.

By Roland Burgan (Rburgan) on Monday, January 25, 2010 - 11:44 am:

I believe there was a large warehouse there, known in its later years as the Potato Warehouse. Later became the site of 41 Lumber Company, which is now located out on US41 East. We used to live just above, at 1010 College Ave., on the corner. House has been vacant now for some years, and is owned by a MTU Professor from Greece.

By Kevin Miller (Kmillertg) on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 - 10:14 pm:

The Crown bakery had a tall chimney that blew over on the same day the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. ( I had taken a picture of that chimney and the roof line of the buildings a year earlier.) Later Crown was sold and became the Parkway? Parkside? bakery out of Calumet. On Tuesdays they had Cream puffs for sale at 35 cents each. Huge cream puffs they were...and rich! I once splurged, ate two of 'em, and got a stomach ache!
