If ever you've been walking in the woods and had a Partridge (Ruffed Grouse) take off nearby, you know the ruckus they make and how startling it can be, so perhaps signs like this would come in handy along the road. George Beveridge is the guy, just out of sight, holding the sign right near the "pet" Partridge that hangs out at their place in Bootjack. You may recall a few previous photos and stories of Pretty Bird here on the Pasty Cam and if so, you already know that George and his wife, Paulette, feed this feathered friend and it keeps coming back for more. They've gained it's trust, so it is quite tame and friendly with George, especially.

Looks like George has charmed another bird friend in the third photo today, as he's got him eating right out of his hand. It sure takes a lot of patience to stand still with seeds like that, waiting for a Chickadee to land there and partake of your offering. I wonder just how long it took before this little feathered friend decided he was OK?

...just like Cinderella, all the little birds and forest creatures come right to her. That has to be soooo cool.

By FJL (Langoman) on Thursday, January 14, 2010 - 07:46 am:

Cinderella?? Wasn't that "Snow white."

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, January 14, 2010 - 07:50 am:

Cinderella had the nasty step mom and sisters.

Wow...George should be featured on a nature program. "The Birdman of Bootjack"

By Theresa R. Brunk (Trb0013) on Thursday, January 14, 2010 - 08:47 am:

Cinderella had some birds come to her but it was mostly mice that followed her around. Snow White had all creatures of the forest come to her side.
I don't care what people say about Walt Disney, he provided many a generation of dreams and fantasy's. Fantasia being one of my all time favorite films. I still am holding on to my copy of it on VHS, while most of the others I have on DVD now.

This brings back a lot of memories! My parents also feed the birds, and I remember the chickadeees flying around my father while he was filling the feeders and landing on his shoulders and hat! They took seeds out of our hands, too - it's such a great experience to have a little chickadee perched on your hand! :-)

Great photos George. I'd like to know where you got your sign from, as I know another lover of birds who would like to have one too. I'd be grateful for this info.

Nice shots of our feathered friends.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Thursday, January 14, 2010 - 03:02 pm:

Beautiful photos! I love birds so much that when there's too much snow on the ground and I don't want to tramp through it, I just pour seeds on our backporch. The birds (mostly cardinals) will sit outside and 'fuss' at me until I put out more seed! Makes a mess of the porch but it's worth it. I also have a photo of a goldfinch sitting on my husband's hand....no seed involved.

The chickadee eating out of the hand does not have to worry about squirrels or other birds. ;O)

I love my birds too! I have quite a few different species in my yard! I enjoy them very much! God's little creatures!

I have a video of chickadees eating out of my hand a few years ago. It took about 20 minutes for the little birds to accept 'em. I had the camera set up looking out the window and the feeders were empty, so I thought I'd try it.

Hi
At Kensington metropark (a bit east of Brighton), they sell bird seed for you to feed birds from the hand. The chickadees are quite tame by now. In fact, in going for winter hikes, if I pause I note that there will be a chickadee or two in nearby trees, watching hoepfully for me to produce some seed. They do come to the hand more readily if you extend your arm out far, stay still, and are standing near a bush or tree that they can retreat to.

I've never had birds come to me but I have had dragonflies visit with me.

Hope no one minds.
